OK, it's time to update the list after some years of neglect. I haven't kept up with new brands, so I want input from you guys on brands that are missing (liek Sundown etc) and feel free to offer thoughts on where the brands belong in the list. I'll post the list from [CAC] as it stands now, and respond to the thread with additions which I will add to the list. After a week or two, I will insert the new additions and update the list on [CAC] for anyone who cares to use it or refer others to it.

Thanks for the help!

The lightning audio Storm series is nice stuff. I've had 2 of there x1.1000.1d's and they are strong amps. not as efficient as zenon amplifiers, but still a good strong amp. The Storm series subs are really really nice (they were built by TC sounds).

For batteries I'd add interstate to good.

I'd add audioque to at least the good list for amplifiers. Subs are good too. I'm sure others will vouch for AQ.

Proof of the LA storm...pretty much a tc3000 with a wide roll surround. those are the LA storm x1 amplifiers in the back

Sundown should be added in the highly recommended IMO. There's a few more companies to be added somewhere.

RD Audio
Shok Industries
RE Audio
Elemental Designs
Audioque
TC Sounds/Audiopulse
Powermaster Batteries

Here's to add to the alternators:
DC Power
Mechman
DB Electrical
Powerbastards
Powermaster

I'd also recommend the Atomic subs, I've owned JL's and Fosgates in the past and these things blew my mind. Single Quantum 15 shows quite a bit of SQ for a larger sub. Can't wait to get the enclosure done for my 2 12" Manhattans.

Also I see DB Drive listed under good subs, but what about there amps?
I don't have experience with them, was thinking about picking up a 1000.1 off of ebay for 159 for a budget amp, I beleive it's okur A3 series.

Not trying to go off topic by asking about an item or anything, just thought maybe others out there would be wondering about there amp line as well.

heh one of the guys who helped compile the list and break it down by product type actually had a McIntosh head unit.. funny it got left off the revised list.. LOL Like I said though, it needed updating.
When this thread dies down, I'll start re-sorting everything and update the main list.

thanks again

RE = Resonant Engineering, or is there another Re around now?
personally, never used Valor, so couldn't say. Someone else took the original list I compiled and separated it into amps/sources/speakers/subs etc.. and rearrranged everything, added some stuff (left a lot out it seems) and I hadn't looked at it much since. I finally decided to re-write it, using the revised list as a starting point.

Also alpine type-r's should probably be highly reccommended, not just good. Honestly is there a better woofer for the price? They can take a beating(easily handle twice their rms rating), get very loud, and sound pretty good.

hmm I thought JVC's Arsenal line was in the good list.. I'll have to check that one when I update. I like their higher end stuff, along with Clarion's flagship line (pro audio)

to specify on good vs highly recommended, the HR section is mostly supposed to be the "beyond reproach" audiophile group of brands, like Zapco and McIntosh, Rainbow, and DynAudio.. The "good" section is the stuff you'd recommend without hesitation, but brands that typically have a lot of similar competition in the marketplace.. such as "Oh yeah, this brand is really good, but also look at these other two brands.."

Some things like the old Orion HCCA/SX/GX/GS lines of amplifiers, PPI art and AM series, anything McIntosh Labs touch, Zapco's CK line of amps and signal processors, and things like that are what I think of as highly recommended. I think what I may do now that I am giving this some thought, is to rename that section.
I think I'll keep the good, questionable, and avoid, and rename the HR section to something more like "elite" or "audiophile grade" as in the type of product that's a go-to brand or line for the competitors in SPL and SQ events, or for Collectors of high end classic audio gear. That may help dispell the line between what's good and what's "great" as that causes too much disagreement.

Anything in the good section, I don't hesitate to recommend. The HR/audiophile section is more for the "I want the best. I don't care what it costs" folks.

does that sound better?

I don't know if I agree with the term "Bang for the buck". Most of the brands you have listed under that title will not stretch your dollar any farther but rather they represent the budget money you put into it. You are not actually getting a lot for the "buck" you put into them. I see more of the "highly recommended" and "good" brands that will give you a lot more for what you pay for in comparison to brands in that price range.

First off, I would give some serious thought into moving Valor HU's down the list... way down, like with Boss, Dual & Jensen. They're the polar opposite of Alpine, which I own (IVA-D300).

Also, adding "Odyssey" for batteries, or put "Odyssey/ Stinger".

I could be wrong on this, but are JL Audio amps really up there with Zapco, McIntosh, & Audison in quality?

Also, I'm fairly sure that Crunch, Kole, & Power Acoustik (amps) are not in the same league as Alpine, Kicker, MTX & Diamond Audio.

Just a few suggestions. I think this list is a great idea. Especially for newcomers. Keep it up.

heh yeah, all noted. I actually didn't come up with hte "bang for the buck" term or catagory, but I think I know who did, and it doesn't surprise me. LOL I think that catagory may go, too, as honestly nothing in car audio is cheap, per se. you always get exactly what you pay for.. that is unless you over-pay for something.. in which case it's your own fault for failing to do your research before shelling out the cash.. haha

So true and not only is it applied to car audio. I see it even more in home audio where some power cords and RCA's range into the thousands.

You get what you pay for however, sometimes your paying for BS.

x2 I know from experience that crunch is trash.

Also noticed hifonics amps in the HR section... that should probably get moved... Idk how the old stuff was, but my experience tells me they are overrated.

guys do me a favor. when listing brands, type out the names for me.. stuff like RE, say..
Resonant Engineering (RE)

that way I don't get confused when I go through all of this later on at 3am, which I'm likely to do at some point. haha thanks.

that's the way I plan to list the brands, so if someone searches "RE" they still find it.. but if they want to find a website, they know the full actual name.

with Hifonics, their amps have been reliable for me, they just used unregulated power supplies and liked to measure their amplifier outputs at 15 or 16 volts, so they'd get higher numbers.. then people bought them and found out the amp didn't deliver the power they expected, and folks got mad.. but they don't fail commonly like, say, Sony.

The funny thing is, people scream about a 10 or 15% flux in output on a 1000 watt amp, but in reality, you couldn't hear the difference. That's not even -1dB in audible volume difference.. :D
I guess I can understand wanting what you paid for though. Reminds me of the guy in teh 80s who sued Ford over the "Mustang GT 5.0" name because the 302 in the Mustang is only 4.95 Liters, and Ford's response was "5.0 is just a name, not a measure of displacement."
The guy lost the suit.

This may be a bit over the top but.... when I read lists like this I always wonder why high end speaker components are never listed. A lot of my builds, especially component speakers, use high-end drivers with custom (or very closely matching, off the shelf) crossovers.

Driver brands like Eton, Seas, ScanSpeak, Vifa, Peerless, Accuton, LPG, Morel -- just off the top of my head -- will produce FAR better component speakers than any pre-packaged systems currently available. Granted, alot of these companies have limited choices in 4ohm drivers available, but that is where finesse and creative crossovers come into play.

Maybe there could be a "custom build" section or something similar. I dunno, just a thought...

I have used most of the brands you've listed, and built passive filters, but to be honest, if you really want to build a high end system, you wouldn't be using passive filters in the first place. You'd run fully active, and use a digital signal processor to avoid phase shift issues, distortion, and heat issues, as well as the induction of noise commonly caused by passive filter networks. DSPs also allow for much better handling of Q factor, time alignment, and delay, not to mention with a fully active system, cut/boost tweaking per driver.

A lot of people don't have the money or experience to do a fully custom install of that nature though, and (at least when I origianlly wrote the list) most of the brands above were included (Vifa, Seas, ScanSpeak, Peerless, and Morel to name a few)

The short of it is, if you need to use a list like the one above, you most likely won't be shopping for the type of gear you've noted. If you are shopping for brands like ScanSpeak, you're most likely not going to need a list like the one above, and will know your gear before you even start piecing that advanced of a system together, or you'll be paying someone like me to do that for you. I'm an EE and a master installer with 20 years' experience. I don't need this sort of a list, nor would you. Someone just starting out in car audio who wants to build his first system on his own, and doesn't know the brands may, however, want a bit of help as a starting point for what sort of brands to consider, and which to avoid. That was the intent of the list. Just a simple starting point for the people without the experience to know what to look for.
It's the same reason I wrote articles on topics like understanding TS specs, and amplifier fundamentals. So people can get a better grasp on the basics when they're starting out.

Thanks for the input!

I think my post was misleading about the lightning audio products (after I saw you had them on the good list for amps and subs). the storm series of lightning audio is the good series (storm amps were built by rockford, storm subs were built by tc sounds.) LA's bolt series is junk. havent tries the strike line up but many have claimed them to be superior to the bolt linup, it's the middle grade stuff. some of the strike series amps had staggered power supplies even, but ive never tried any so I cannot comment on them.
