Video Ipod - Do I need to buy QuickTimePro?

I'm trying to upload my videos from my hard drive (wmv, avi, mpg and other types) but it says the Ipod won't read them. Apple says that I need to buy QuickTimePro to export my movies to Itunes. Is there any other way or other programs that will do this for me for free? Thanks so much. Any help you have is greatly appreciated!
