A lot of people hate this guy, just don't take his word for gospel and you will be alright. Straight forward.

Err, umm. They take pictures and you use them when you want a picture? Treat them basically like a film camera. The differences are really detail stuff (saves a digital file to a solid-state card instead of exposing light-sensitive film).

Rockwell has a lot of information, but basically take what he says with a bag of salt. He has definite opinions & is a Nikon fanboy--and allows that to strongly color much of what is on the site. IMHO some of what's on there is so skewed by that as to make it useless. So, get other opinions as well.

If you're new to photography, take a look at the book Understanding Exposure by Bryan Peterson: http://www.amazon.com/Understanding-Exposure-Photographs-Digital-Updated/dp/0817463003
