Hate Busted Sony; now want either Canon or Nikon. Help!

I'm the one with the busted memory stick a few posts down. Pissed at it, figuring camera needs fixing (since none of the 3 memory sticks are working), so contemplating not wasting money on fix and instead put it towards getting a better camera.
I'm not a beginner, but I'm not quite a professional as yet. I want digital, but it looks from my research that the Digital/SLRs are better quality. Does anyone even use film in those cameras or just use it for digital? Anyway, I like to do nature/travel/animals, buildings and a bit of macro photography (flowers, leaves). I'd like to stick to the $500-$700 range. I'm guessing it's between Nikon and Canon. What do you all recommend?
