So for school I have to do a research paper on something in the 80's that has also impacted the future aka present day. I decided to do punk rock bands. But I have to narrow it to a few bands. So I need some opinions... what are your guys favorite punk bands, or bands that really changed the definition of this genre and made punk is what it is today.

I was thinking for one of my bands to do red hot chili peppers, since in the 80's they started out punk but changed in the 90's and allot of people don't know that, or at least I didn't until today. If you disagree with someones choice, say something as the more you guys post the more I am educated Thanks E!

Boomtown* Rats would actually be a good band to choose.
songs like I don't like mondays would be something interesting to write about.
not to mention Bob Geldof's activism with Live Aid in 85 to spread awareness of AIDS to his more recent Live 8 to persuade the G8 to send more relief to africa.

Yea had to do a research paper on Geldof. haha

I'm not much into 80's metal, nothing wrong with it, but I would just much rather do it on punk lol.

Ramones was the first "older" punk band I started listening to, so i might have to throw them in the list just because. Anyone think of any other bands/people that stood out among the crowd or really represented what Punk was or is today? Tomorrow I'll look more into this during class and keep you guys posted with what I find.

Was U2 a punk band back in the 80s? I just don't see it but I've never listened to U2's old stuff. Hell, I don't listen to their new stuff either.

"or bands that really changed the definition of this genre and made punk is what it is today. "

These bands influenced a ton of bands.

ya, I agree, these are not hardcore punk, but were helping to mold a new gerne of music. Old U2, before they were U2 was very punk, but in a generic sorta way.

Do a story on Sid Vicious

I love the Repo man Sound track myself. Plenty of old skool punk.

Anyone think misfits are not 80's enough? Since they started in the late 70's and broke up in the early 80's?
