My cd drives are working, spinning the disks, opening and closing. But they don't show up in 'my computer' or anywhere. I can't play any music or dvd's and in programs that play it, the drives aren't even listed on the pull down menu. It's like they don't exist.

Go to your "device manager"

check for a list of your devices.

See if your device is under "DVD/Cd-Rom drives."

You may have to open the PC and check the physical connection of the drive itself.

Remove it completely, restart, then turn it off.

Re-attach the CD drive, then turn it back on. This should prompt the PC to detect a new drive or new device.

It's just there are so many cables in there that I don'twant to risk forgetting to plug something in. I'll try it though.

You don't need to remove the drive. All you need to do is unplug the power cable. You can unplug the IDE cable too if you want to, but you don't need to. The PC can't see anything that doesn't have power.

I'm going to sound so stupid here, but what's an IDE cable?

You can just unplug the the power cable leading to the CD drive.

If the drive opens and closes it has power. Check the IDE cable, its the wide grey cable connected to the drive. Also make sure the other end of the cable is connected to the motherboard.
