Hey there. I'm looking to upgrade my system and was wondering how much memory I should go for. I'm looking for value, but I do download movies and music so I'm looking for enough to do what I have to do. Right now I'm at 512mb ddr sdram dual channel. Any recommendations? Thank you.

That depends on the capacity of your system. Some systems have a 2GB upper limit, some have 4, so you first need to know what your system can handle.

How does the amount of ram affect your downloading of music and movies? That would be your hard drive space. Ram is used for currently running applications and programs.

External hard drives are a great affordable way to store your files while freeing up your internal HD space.

Paul...if you had no ram you could not save things to your hard drive...Faster ram makes the timings of between your Hard drive and your CPU faster..soo in this case RAM is needed.. I would look at newegg.com and upgrade to at least 1GB of ram...But like berny said all computers have a limit..and find the limit out..and go high as u can with the ram

Keep OS limits in mind?
Can Win2kPro, for example, handle 4GB?
How about XP or some of the legacy stuff like '98?

generally:
windows 9x: 128MB (any more is useless due to memory addressing issues)
windows 2000 or XP: 2GB ideal, 1GB "good"
Vista x32: 4GB ideal, 2GB "good"
Vista x64: whatever you can afford.

I use 8GB in a vista x64 PC for video and graphics editing, and image manipulation work, rendering, and so forth. If I was a typical home user, 4GB would be plenty.

if you have no clue what your talking about at least dont act like you do.

ram is temporary memory, every ram has different speeds it run at, if your pc consumes(in terms) 200mb and the specific program you run takes 60 mb thats 260 mb of used ram. u have 252 unused mb. if your at least under 75% of your max ram theres no need. ur prob at 800 mhz get your specs for your pc. that rams almost 6 years old (get a new pc )

For windows XP 1 GB RAM is enough.
