A "Beta" version is usually a test version of something that is used to find "bugs" or errors in things. Just about every program has a beta version before it's final and almost error free version is released. Some betas work great though and require very little changes or tweaks to become final versions. Program developers will use thousands of "guinea pigs" or beta testers to beta test their newly developed things. It can be fun beta testing but they usually ask for your support in finding bugs and errors in return, usually you're surveyed as well as to how the thing you're testing can be improved.
