In this video, Mimi and Grace take a look at two companies making smartbags. The Phorce Pro claims to be the world’s first smartbag, while the Bluesmart is the first smart, connected carry-on suitcase.
These new, so-called smart bags do more than just help you carry around your tablet, laptop and smartphone. Smartbags mainly provide two important functions — device charging on-the-go and Bluetooth connectivity so you can be alerted if you leave the bag behind. Yes, you’ll need an app for that provided by the company. Lastly, as you’d expect smartbags do provide ample pockets and protection to transport your portable digital devices.
Phorce is now shipping two smartbags, the Phorce Pro 3-in-1 messenger bag for $649 (shown in the video) and the Phorce Freedom for $199, which is smaller, provides less charging capabilities, and no Bluetooth. Meanwhile, the crowd-funded Bluesmart carry-on is now available for pre-order on Indiegogo for $280, arriving August 2015.
As of February 2, 2016 Phorce has closed down.
After we finished shooting the video, I learned about AMPL Labs at CES 2015. They make a SmartBackpack that protects your devices using shock absorbing dampers and a rain-resistant coating, plus device charging, smart sensors, and alerts with companion app. Pricing has not been set, and availability is planned for the 2015 Holiday season.
A more recent contender is the TYLT Powerbag.
In all cases (no pun intended), you’ll need to be smart enough to remember to recharge your smart bag. Happy bag shopping.
