1982 JVC TV starting to "squeal"..Time to buy new TV...What to buy? LCD (Plasma looks bad)

Hi,

I've had used/cheap TV's since college in 1975! First it was a $59 B&W "touch on/off" Sony in college. When I got my first apartment I paid $300 for a 1983 color Sony Trinitron.

That lasted to the early 90's and my second apartment...when on one 4th of July weekend I found on an empty summer street that a 20" color TV had been discarded - it looked in perfect condition, and it was. Except the speakers did not work. However, the sound and headphone plug did, so I rigged it up to computer speakers and it sounded great.

And then, a few years ago, a friend had a garage sale, he had a 1982 JVC "square screen" (w/rounded tube) design from when he got HIS first apartment. It still worked, and it had sound. So he gave it to me when it didn't sell..

And just in the past few weeks, it has started to "squeal" when it's on for too long. So I finally am biting the bullet and am shopping for a new TV..for the first time in over 20 years.

I feel like Rip Van Winkle..what to get? CRT... LCD... Plasma...From what I've been reading, Plasma is problematic...and expensive! I like the LCD's size/shape..except the picture does not seem to be as clear as the plasma TV's

The JVC is 20" and very clunky, it sits in the middle of my apartment on a TV stand made from metal shelf components from The Container Store. The heavy metal handles on the stand only allow for a TV of 22.5" max width.

I saw some nice 20" TV's..don't need DVD or VCR. I saw a Phillips 20" at Walmart for just $150 +/-
but who wants another clunky set sitting in the middle of the apartment.

So, I'm basically settling on an LCD 20" TV..I don't want a wide-screen ..just the regular proportion. I liked the Samsung 20" LCD..but the reviews I read were vicious.

Any thoughts on similar brands? Which is the best one to get?

Or should I just get the 1982 JVC repaired??
