Panasonic TH50PX500U the Best 50" Plasma?

I'm searching for the best 50" plasma. Consumer Reports NOV 05 edition rates the Panasonic TH50PX50U as one of its recommended picks. I now see online Panasonic has another model TH50PX500U.

I sit approx 15 feet away; I'm looking at getting DIRECTV [will have to upgrade to HD receiver equipment for $200 and then spend an extra $10/month]; and I want to hook up a Home Theater system [DVD player, CDs, AM/FM radio, etc. - any recommendations on a system; nothing fancy?]

Thoughts/comments/recommendations on where to buy; store/online; install; self or let CircuitCity/DIRECTV types do it?

Coincidentally, I'm in a like situation. I just ordered the TH50PX500U (not delivered yet since they're on back order). After viewing its display in the store, it was easy to pick it. I saw nothing that can match it at its price point. Also checked many reviews which solidly point thumbs up. Because of its picture quality, I'm also purchasing the DirecTV HD receiver, a DVD player and A/V receiver all with HDMI input/output for optimum resolution. I can't wait to get it all set up and running. My research and intuition tells me that I'll be very happy.
Let me know what you think.

BklynMel - where did you order from; online or local store? What about cables - What comes with it and what has to be additionally ordered? Anyone know where to go and how to find out which online retailers are authorized Panasonic retailers?

I am "patiently" waiting for the 42" version of this bad boy to arrive. (would get 50" but i want to stay married.) I talked to Panasonic yesterday and they said that they were posting dates of mid novemeber for availability on their web site but they now believe they will be around much sooner - like end of Oct. I am going to wait until the back log of orders is filled and see what happens with prices. You can buy it directly from Panasonic and get 10% off and free shipping if you join some "panasonic" club. You will have to pay sales tax though.

Best deal I've seen so far online is PriceMad $3,844 [no tax and $249 for S&H] and PC Connection 3,899 [no tax and free shipping] listed thru BizRate Shopping Search. Anyone have any experience with these online dealers?

I recently purchased TH-50PX500U from http://www.mydigitaluniverse.com/Show.asp?PID=2567
they had the TV in stock and received within 5 days of purchase. I purchased the SANUS VMPL50B wall mount from ubid.com. Most retailers will not exchange the TV if found defective,(shipping damage yes) Panasonic will make the call for the exchange if they cannot repair it. No advantage purchasing locally on this issue, plus usually higher prices too. I would recommend on-line and make sure they have good reviews and in stock.
This 50 plasma TV is awesome in HDTV and digital cable, make sure you use good quality video cables for the hook-up, they do make a difference.

Galileo - thanks for the input. How much did you pay? What cables did you buy? Do you have a Home Theater System; if so, what model?

I have been waiting over 5 weeks from Sears. Every week they say expected date is one additional week. I have also been checking at CC.com & BB.com & they have no availability as well. I think the lower cost created a demand that Panasonic can't keep up with. I'm going to wait as I have many Panasonic products & buy them when ever possible. They just produce a great product. Who would think a $4K TV not in stock anywhere......

TVAUTHORITY.COM HAS TH50PX50U FOR $3,095 PLUS SHIPPING. THEY APPEAR TO BE A REPUTABLE SITE, MEMBER OF BBB, ETC. IT IS ON BACKORDER OF COURSE BUT A VERY EDUCATED WOMAN THERE TOLD ME THAT HP BOUGHT A BUNCH OF THE TH50PX500U'S AND PUT THERE NAME ON IT. IT IS THE IDENTICAL TV, JUST HP BOUGHT A BUNCH AND PUT THERE NAMES ON IT. IT IS HP MODEL #: PL5000N AND IT SELLS FOR $3,395 PLUS
SHIPPING. I MIGHT BUY IT RATHER THAN WAIT.

has anyone noticed that there has been a price increase within the last week?

Anybody have any other recommendations on reliable internet dealers that they have dealt with before?

Stay away from Drplasma.com They offer a reasonable price but it is NOT in stock and they have NO idea when it will be. I don't trust them.

Toshiba 50" is just a little bit more and is better than the Panasonic hands down. If you want the best for a little more get the Pioneer 50".

I just purchased the Pioneer PDP-5060HD from an online vender. http://www.monitoroutlet.com. I had read the Consumer Reports reviews also. But they hadn't included the Pioneer 5060 which replaced the 5050 I believe and wasn't out at the time Consumer Reports had done their review of the Plasma TVs. I looked at the 5060 in a retail store and compared it to the Panasonic 50PX50U, which has the same display as the 500U. I had already decided that if I got the Panasonic it would be the 500U, it has better speakers than the 50U, takes a media card and has a computer hookup, which I will probably never use, and if spending that much money I wanted what I considered the best. I liked the picture on the Pioneer as much or better than the Panasonic. The reasons I chose the Pioneer over the Panasonic: Pioneer weights much less, Pioneer uses about half the electric power and with less heat (higher wattage means more heat) it should have fewer problems, I also like the media box of the Pioneer and the new technology of the plasma cells used by Pioneer (Deep Encased Cell Structure). I plan to wall mount the unit and the media box makes it easier to hook up and change different video and audio wiring. I went to the Pioneer web site
http://www.pioneerelectronics.com
and went through their list of Authorized Dealers looking for the best price. I paid $4,390 which included shipping, insurance and there was no sales tax. There are better prices on the Internet, but I was worried about the warranty and I felt that their vendors would probably be easier to deal with. I hope I made the right decision. I think with everything I paid about $400 to $600 or so more for the Pioneer than the Panasonic. Quite a bit. It was a choice for me between the Panasonic 50PX500U and the Pioneer 5060. I hope I made the right decision and it's worth the extra money. I like Consumers Reports and even though a few times I have gone against their recommendations I usually follow their advice. I'm retired now but have worked for various NBC television stations for over thirty years, was an electrical engineering major and a good picture is important to me. Somewhere else I made a similar post on this board. This one is pretty much the same.
Good luck.

what's the difference between the Pioneer 5060 and the Pioneer Elite 50" 1130HD? Is it worth the extra $?

Guys, I have available to me the Pany 500U and the HP PL5000N (same TV) for the same price, however, I'll have to wait a month for the HP. I understand the HP doesn't have the TV Guide feature and because it is new, there are no HP codes out for universal remotes but otherwise it is identical to the Pany. I do like the all black look of the HP though. Which would you buy?

Great info. Does anyone have any info on the TH50PHD8UK? These names are starting to confuse me, so please excuse this message if it is redundant. I just recently ordered this tv with recommendations from CNET and a few other sites. I was wondering if anyone has it already or any feedback. Any info will be greatly appreciated.

thanks

You get what you pay for. If you want the best plasma display, you have to pay for it. A Runco plasma is the BEST in the market. They will cost you more. You can not buy them at a retail store. You have to go to a custom installation dealer. The next in line would probably be the Piorneer Elite series. Followed by Fujitsu. Sony no longer makes plasma displays, only LCD. Mitsubishi make a descent set. All the others you are taking you chances with. If you have pixels out, you are pretty much screwed, unless there are more the 7. I guess most of them think that 7 pixels out is okay. I do not. To my knowledge Runco is the only company that will replace a set with only one pixel out.

Jeffrey, check some other threads here and also look at avsforum.com THe 1130 can be had for within $800 of the 5060 and offers a lot more. If you can use the extrea features now or down the road, treat yourself to the 1130. Both the 5060 and 1130 are excellent plasmas. Can't go wrong if you get a good deal (no where near MSRP).

Lon: why don't you register to give out all your advice.

I have had the tv for I think going on almost 4 months and love it. The picture is beautiful. My only complaint from a visual standpoint is the shape at the bottom of the tv. It bulges/sticks out about 4 inches, so it defintely does not have as flush an appearance as many.

And yes, he is an authorized rep.

But for a bang for the buck standpoint it is second to none in my opinion. I have a guy in the NY area I bought it form, if anyone is looking I can ck with him, I got it Aug/Sept and paid 3999, no tax, shipped for an additionaal $150 took 2 days, and purchjased the extended warranty for 300.

if there is a better plasma than the the elite930 or 1130, they don't sell it in baltimore.

I would appreciate anyones advice here. I am looking for a 60" for a home theater system. I am pretty confuesed as to what will deliver the best picture and reliability; RPLCD or Plasma. Your thoughts will be really appreciated. I don't have unlimited funds but I am willing to pay for a great picture. Is plasma burn-out a serious issue?

Thanks!

I viewed the Sony 70 inch Wega RPSXRD tonight. A stunningly clear sharp and bright picture....for 13,000 dollars.

I prefer the 65 inch Panasonic Plasma for 10,000. The picture is more realistic to me.

There no 60 inch plasmas that I know of. I think there are 61 inch models.

I agree with Bill, go for the Elite if your room is right for it. That is the best plasma picture in the 60+ size. The Sony 70SXRD has a gorgeous picture but is over priced and not quite as tweakable.

What is your viewing distance and how much ambient light is in the room?

The Panasonic plasmas are impressive. My wife is a former video editor for a local network station, and has a good eye. She was impressed with the black, the lack of artifacts, and the way they handle text. I was considering both the TH50PX50U and its step-up (picture in picture; SD inputs) TH50PX500U. Now, I want to view the industrial version TH-50PHD8UK, as I do not receive much OA signal.
QUESTION: The local home theatre installer suggests using component cables, because of the lengthy (18') run from components to the screen, and high cost of an 18' HDMI cable. What are the advantages of HDMI?

HDMI carries both Audio and Video. In addition, in the future- if you want to watch HD- DVDs/Blu-RAY DVDs - you will need an HDMI connection to view them and hear them in full rez audio and video. This is because of copy protection handshakes.

However, currently HDMI connections are a big headache offering no video improvement and potentially worse video than component. While some people report improvement with HDMI, its largely due to inferior deinterlacers and sclaers on the component side to start with. Simple perusal of multiple forums show folks spending inordinate amounts of time dealing with problems with their HDMI connections and many switching back to component. Eventually it will all get worked out with a different plug type ( HDMI 1.3) compatible firmware between Cable boxes, redceievers and DVD players etc. Right now its a mess and early adopters will get screwed. However, if you are in wall cabling, then be sure you know how to snake HDMI cables thru for the coming years.
