47" 1080i TV New Sony BluRay Direct TV HD DVR Yamaha 5.1 Surround
Here is my issue:
I am using my TV as the hub. My two inputs, the bluray and dvr, both have HDMI and work beautifully with the 2 HDMI portws I have on my TV. Problem comes with the sound. I want 5.1 surround but all the audio outputs from the TV are analog R/L, save one: a SPDIF optical audio out. It just so happens that my 5.1 receiver does in fact have a SPDIF digital optical in. So i figured I would plug those up and everything would work great. Not so much. Cannot get anysound from the receiver. I've dabbled with the settings and all, but nothing. No my idea behind this was that if I do it this was I simply change the input on my TV and the sound goes along with it out to the receiver. Made sense to me... Without the optical cable I don't see a way of getting my 5.1 surround. Any idea what I am doing wrong? Is there another way to do this? Keep in mind there is no HDMI on my reciever whatsoever. Any help would be so greatly appreciated! Thanks guys.
