What will be the primary use of this computer?

Gaming, documents, internet browsing, e-mail?

A starter computer for $1200?? That's quite an amount for a 'starter' computer in my mind. For that price a laptop might even be a better choice.

Building it is better but i assume you don't know how
So i'll tell you the specs you want
1. 17 inch flat screen monitor will do her plenty
2. Go with AMD X2 dual core. (dual core is worth it)
Or if you like intel then Pentium D (dual core)
3. 1 GB ram
4. At least a 200 GB hard drive
5. Must have a DVD burner

Reasons why is because you want to make the most out of your money. THese upgrades don't cost that much and will last you the next 5 years

depends on if you want a ready made system or not.

I would say pick an HP and save a little of the hassle. Since you're on a budget heres what you should get.

HP Desktop with an AMD 64 3500+
512 MB Ram
HP Monitor 17" Flat screen LCD
Canon printer

Now you can get all these components for less then 1200$ add in microsoft office. Ask for the student and teacher edition which has everything in it except the 300$ price tag and you should be good to go.
