Hi all,

Newbie here

I'm after a digital camera. Doesn't have to be too special beyond a) a high resolution (12MP minimum) and b) reliable and likely to last a while. I'm looking into this - http://ubuyhardware.com/p~p-1848567000~b-402~Olympus-Stylus-Tough-8010-14-Megapi xel-Digital-Camera---Silver.aspx - do you guys think it'd be appropriate? Any suggestions of an alternative?

Thanks in advance!

Hi Marcos,

The first thing to consider is what do you plan to shoot with this camera and what would you like to spend on it. Megapixels should not be the only critieria to base your choices on. With this info laid out we can begin to offer sugestions on the various cameras/kits available.

MP are fun to talk about, but what you really need is the best OPTICS to match.
12mp thru the bottom of a coke bottle is still awful.

You only need 12MP if you are making enlargements. My 8MP camera with top-notch glass can make 16x20s easily.

What's a coke bottle lol?

Seriously though MP "used" to be the benchmark in digital cameras' quality rating. I remember paying $300 years ago for a 3mp Kodak and the salesman was like "dude, with that kind of res you could zoom in on blades of grass!" Lol.

Today the Iphone takes better pics than that.

Leo is right. MPs are only as good as what they "see" through.

Kinda like attempting to star gaze near LA.
