Tying wires

We've all had to do it at some point - tie two exposed wires and cover them. My question is, does anyone know of any tricks for tying two exposed wires so that they can be taped-over and be shaped basically like a regular..cord or cable or whatever?

Do you know what I mean? I don't like having to twist them together like you do the ties on the bread loaf, because then the two cables tend to come out in the same direction.

Slide 2" of suitably sized heatshrink over one wire.
Strip back 3/4" of each wire and splay the wires at both ends of the join.
Push together to mesh the strands.
Twist a few times and apply solder, slide back the heat shrink over the join. Heat to seal.
et voila.
If you dont have solder, twist as in the bread loaf tie, fold back and cover with heatshrink.
Personally though, I prefer a bowline and half hitch.;)
