You might be better off to start with decent stuff. Get a nice head unit, like a pioneer or jvc, something you can afford. I've got a deh 1500 myself, wanted something for a low price, and it's 200 watts, sounds good. So I'd say get that or a deh 1600. Or some other decent but not too pricey head unit. Maybe go with some nice speakers, Like if you could afford some maybe alpine, blaupunkt, pioneer, or kicker or rockford fosgate speakers. Maybe start out with that. Just a head unit and speakers and upgrade from there. I got my pioneer cd player, and even with factory speakers, there was a big difference. So I think you'd be better off going with some nice, decent components, and upgrade as you go vs buying everything at once. That way, you start out with decently balanced system, if your car has 6x9's in the back, or something like that, a decent head unit and good speakers ought to give you a little punch. Then you can upgrade later on as you go.

umm, that head unit is not 200 watts.
no way, no how.
it's about 15 watts x 4.

I guarantee you it is 200 watts. 200 watts peak anyway, probably more like 20-25 rms. But it is 200 watts, at least for the peak value. You may not actually see the 200 watts, but that is the peak rating. That's one reason I chose it, because it had more power than most of the others in my price range. But however much power, it's a good deck for the money in my opinion:-). I just think the guy on the budget would be happier starting out with some good speakers and decent unit as opposed to buying 2nd hand or something. 2nd hand is ok, but with 2nd hand, you don't always know what you are getting.

Btw, here's a link that gives all the specs on that unit. Just proving my point:-).

peak is meaningless.
"200 watts" is a statement used to attract the uneducated to low quality products most times.
that's 50 watts peak x 4.
in reality the unit is between 11 and 22 watts per channel.
The most powerful headunits on the market are Alpine's Vdrive units, which I can tell you first hand are far stronger than the Pioneer, and they produce 26 watts RMS x 4.

Thanks for the link. I know the unit. I was a Pioneer/JVC/Eclipse/Alpine dealer for source units. Anyway, just saying don't use peak power ratings..
that causes all sorts of problems with the average consumer.. they see "200 watt CD player!" then wonder why someone with a 50 watt RMS x 4 amplifier has a system that's so much louder than theirs.

ah, here we go, quoted directly from your site link:
"4 x 22 Watts RMS"

as a rule of thumb, if you see a peak power rating, divide by 3 for the RMS rating..
that's for a rough figure. at least.

Actually I heard that Alpine was coming out with a new head unit something like the 9875 series or some wierd # like that, but the Wattage RMS on that is a 30x4 Unit, Sounds like an odd # but I there has been alot of talk and quotes directly from alpine about it.

Well, like I said probably only get like 20 something watts rms. Who knows. I'm still learning, looked at alpine actually, but didn't have much extra $$ to shell out at the time. I was looking at a nice blaupunkt however, but the place sold it before I got back to get it. So oh well, pioneer is not my favorite company, but for the money, the 1500 is decent:-)

I'd take the Pioneer over the Blaupunkt too :D
