Silver Member Username: Denali_on_22sMaryville, TN Us Post Number: 219 Registered: Feb-06 | Sorry, I know this is the third thread I've started like this, but I can promise if I find a resolution from this one I will be done posting these threads! On to the topic, BTL vs HD3... I'm in a pickle I'm looking for a high SPL sub with some crisp bass. I understand the SQ won't be great on etiher sub (or so i assume) but can anyone give me a rating on each sub in SPL and SQ. Either sub I get will be a Dual 2 ohm 15" model. It will be housed in a 4.5 cu. ft. box tuned at 33 hz. What can I get loudest, lowest, and cleanest with? It will be powered by a Hifonics BXI1500. I don't wanna hear that i will be underpowering it. I know that, but I've talked to Scott and DJ both telling me that both subs will get obnoxiously loud with very little power (less than I would be giving it). Scott told me about a guy taking home first place in a competition with 900 watts to his fully loaded BTL. DJ said the Audioque will pump out more bass then he would want with only 800 watts put to it. Can anyone give me some help here, it is stritly between these two subs. I appreciate everyone's opinion, but I want either the Fi or the Audioque. Thannks in advance for the input I recieve! |

Silver Member Username: Th3pwn3rChicago, Illinois U.S.A Post Number: 378 Registered: Jul-06 | I thought the HD3 subs were designed to be more on the SPL side? |
Silver Member Username: JkidderSpring hill, Florida Usa Post Number: 256 Registered: Nov-05 | they r dude. read wat he said. he knows neither sub wil have good sq but hes lookin for spl. i personally dont think u can go wrong. jus get the one wit the best warranty or cheaper price. lol |
Silver Member Username: Denali_on_22sMaryville, TN Us Post Number: 223 Registered: Feb-06 | Yeah I'm thinkin i might go with the Fi if the reviews from chad and dr smith are both pretty equal because it looks better haha (sissy I know) but hey who cares if it looks and sounds good. Plus i know a bit about RE subs and since scott used to build those I know the Fis will be good. I do love the magnet on those HD3s though |
New member Username: DjlPost Number: 4 Registered: Sep-06 | The HD3 was never designed as an SPL sub. It was designed as an extreme duty daily driver. More of a very "beefed up" sql driver. Soundquality vs SPL of the HD3 is determined more by box tuning. The design of the HD3 also lends itself to work very well in SPL applications. |
Silver Member Username: BernymacRialto, CA United States Post Number: 324 Registered: Sep-04 | Yup yup, UPS man drove by, I have a view of the front. Thought my HD3's came in . But mofo kept going. |

Silver Member Username: DrsmithMontana USA Post Number: 843 Registered: Nov-04 | problem with the FI, there is no warranty, the BTL is not covered by FI because they know what people plan on doing with them, if you dont beleive me go to there website and read the ENTIRE warranty section |
Silver Member Username: Denali_on_22sMaryville, TN Us Post Number: 225 Registered: Feb-06 | That definately changes things up... not sure what to do now... |
Gold Member Username: Basshead86Google is your Friend Post Number: 6374 Registered: Aug-05 | have you ever had to use the warranty anyway??? lol not trying to deter you from the HD. AWESOME sub, but seriously..... |

Silver Member Username: DrsmithMontana USA Post Number: 858 Registered: Nov-04 | yeah i bet if you werent abusive to them you would never need the warranty, i just wanted to throw it out there cuz someone said go with the cheaper one with better warranty, in which case the HD wins both lol |

Silver Member Username: Denali_on_22sMaryville, TN Us Post Number: 234 Registered: Feb-06 | Yeah, highly doubtful that i would abuse it but it makesyou think of the quality considering theres not like a warranty void (like JL) so maybe the sub isnt made so well |
Silver Member Username: DrsmithMontana USA Post Number: 869 Registered: Nov-04 | no im sure its made like a tank lol, just scott knows people are going to be burping them like crazy trying to get the most out of them and cant afford to fix every BTL that was blown with thousands of watts over its limit |
Silver Member Username: Denali_on_22sMaryville, TN Us Post Number: 236 Registered: Feb-06 | do you not agree there should be a warranty void though? maybe no warranty on burps or something |
Silver Member Username: DrsmithMontana USA Post Number: 893 Registered: Nov-04 | would be nice but he probably wouldnt be able to tell how it happened, trust me though with a practical set up i doubt you will blow one |

Silver Member Username: ShowridesHartford, CT USA Post Number: 372 Registered: Feb-06 | WOW, the BTL doesn't have a warranty? I know many companies don't offer warranties if you compete in SPL comps with their products, but I am surprised their isn't a warranty on the BTL's for people who just use them in daily setups. |
Silver Member Username: Denali_on_22sMaryville, TN Us Post Number: 246 Registered: Feb-06 | Yeah, I found it out, but I dont think a hifonics bxi1500 is gonna blow it haha |

Gold Member Username: Basshead86Google is your Friend Post Number: 6427 Registered: Aug-05 | BTL it may not have a warranty, but i know Scott would take care of it if you had any problems that didn't warrant the Dumbazz Award. The HD looks awesome, but i would want to try the BTL....and it just looks soooo sexxy |
Gold Member Username: Basshead86Google is your Friend Post Number: 6428 Registered: Aug-05 | just wait another week and ask Chad how he likes his BTLs |
Silver Member Username: ShowridesHartford, CT USA Post Number: 373 Registered: Feb-06 | Anyone know which has more output? My guess would be the HD3, but it would be cool to see some tests done at different amounts of power. |

Gold Member Username: BestmankindLos Angeles, CA USA Post Number: 5962 Registered: Oct-05 | my btl weighs in at healthy 67lbs each. it will have triple stack magnets and extra long vc for higher excursion. what more can you ask from a subwoofer. i should have it in less than a week but i still have to wait for a box. 2 weeks until my review. |
Silver Member Username: Denali_on_22sMaryville, TN Us Post Number: 264 Registered: Feb-06 | what do you think will get louder on 1400 watts? |
Silver Member Username: Sb2012Iowa US Post Number: 307 Registered: Jul-06 | the HD3...i put my 12 inch in today...WOW...im running about 1500 watts...DJ was right tho...i wouldnt consider it strictly SPL...more of a beefed up SQL sub lol |
Silver Member Username: BernymacRialto, CA United States Post Number: 348 Registered: Sep-04 | did you build the box or have the box made built to Dj's specs. tuned to 40hz? I can't wait until I get mines this coming Tuesday :D. |
Silver Member Username: Sb2012Iowa US Post Number: 309 Registered: Jul-06 | 2.5 cubic feet tuned 36 Hz...had someone build it...dj came up with the specs...but i had it tuned to 36 instead of 40... you will not be dissapointed...wow...speechless |

Bronze Member Username: Bass__monkeyLas vegas, Nevada United states Post Number: 15 Registered: Sep-06 | In my opinion, if you are tuned at 33 hertz the BTL will deliver. ( the high xmax coil and 3rd magnet with the cooling ) heck, go here ( www.stevemeadedesigns.com ) I think steve has got a single t 4000 amp to each 18" btl and they don't stink at all. ( based on application ) he's tuned DEEP as well. For the price they offer and the performance... "you can't go wrong" hope this helps... have fun! |
Silver Member Username: BernymacRialto, CA United States Post Number: 351 Registered: Sep-04 | Yep, war....We'll, I know I can send my subwoofers back and have them modify it also, but I'll just wait until I can afford to bump up the amps as well. =). |
Silver Member Username: Denali_on_22sMaryville, TN Us Post Number: 271 Registered: Feb-06 | well im only running 1400 watts so would cooling or 3rd magnet be necessary? scott said to jsut go with the pfchamber... but would those other things improves SQ/SPL/Lowless |
Gold Member Username: BestmankindLos Angeles, CA USA Post Number: 5993 Registered: Oct-05 | it would be one hell of a battle. lol. |
Silver Member Username: Denali_on_22sMaryville, TN Us Post Number: 288 Registered: Feb-06 | What would adding the 3rd magnet high xmax coil and pf chamber do to the performance of my sub on 1400 watts? |
Bronze Member Username: Bass__monkeyLas Vegas, Nevada U.S. of A. Post Number: 64 Registered: Sep-06 | 3rd mag and high xmax coil allows for more linerity, anything getting ridiculous like 3000 watts get the cooling. the chamfer allows for smooth air flow around the coil.(allows for relief of pressure under the dust cap as well.) this sub will take 1400 watts no problem... |
Silver Member Username: Denali_on_22sMaryville, TN Us Post Number: 290 Registered: Feb-06 | well i know that but i didnt think i would need a buncha extras with onyl 1400 watts i guess ill throw on at least the high xmax coil and chamfer i dunno about the 3rd magnet |

Silver Member Username: Bass__monkeyLas Vegas, Nevada U.S. of A. Post Number: 110 Registered: Sep-06 | u need the 3rd mag with the high xmax coil. |
Silver Member Username: Denali_on_22sMaryville, TN Us Post Number: 329 Registered: Feb-06 | scott said the "3rd magnet is normally used as a spacer for the longer high xmax coil. While it does add a small amount of motor strength, it is nothing major and only seems to truly help in reducing flux compression in very high current coil/power applications." "With only a BX1500, I would only add the pole chamfer for $10. It would offer the best cost to benefit ratio with a lower powered application." I was gonna add the high xmax anyways, but from the words of scott i dont need to spend the 40 extra, but I will if i have the money |
