hey I wanted to know if its best to put a 1200 watt rms amp on a 1000 watt rms sub. Or am I supposed to match the rms of the sub with the amp? a local car audio shop said if the wattage on the amp is more than the wattage on the sub it will disort. My uncle said if the wattage on the amp is lower than the sub it will disort, but if it matches it will disort when it is turned all the way up he said the best thing is to have a amp that has more wattage output than the subs wattage. He said he has a 2400 watt amp on a 800 watt sub in pro audio. Help me out here, I have a audiobahn 1800 watts rms @ 1 ohm that i can put on 2 dual 4 ohm 15" solobarics L7's in 1 ohm mode. I also have 2 Ma Audio 1200 watts rms @ 1 ohm, which means I can put 1 1200 watt amp on 1 kicker solobaric 15 dual 2 ohm sub in 1 ohm mode, and the other 1200 watt amp on the other solobaric 15" dual 2 ohm subin 1 ohm mode. The solobaric 15's L7's are 1000 watts RMS and 2000 watts peak. So I can put a 1800 watt RMS @ 1 ohm amp on 2 2000 watt RMS subs and be short 100 watts per sub. Or I can put 2 seperate 1200 watts RMS @ 1 ohm on 2 seperate subs and be over by 200 watts per sub.
if ur impedence match & ur electrical sytem is up 2 mark - then yes , having a bigger amp (that puts out genuine clean rated wrms) than is needed is the norm .
Bigger amp means u do not have 2 turn up ur vol max 2 get loud & it also means ur amp will also have 2 not work as hard - its a very normal thing ppl do so no worries ....
all the good subs require more power then their RMS rating as long as u dont overpower it too much it would be fine. Underpowering could hurt subs actually its best to overpower by just a little say a 1000watt rms sub have a 1500watt rms amp and watch the gain level
