polyfill will serve to slow the transmission of the soundwaves to an extent, making the box appear about 10% larger than actual size. polyfill also helps if the box is "square" with the rear surface and the front in parallel, by reducing standing wave reflection (SWR) which cancels bass. this is why many boxes have one side angled.
