A voice coil is a long piece of copper and sometimes they use other stuff, it is wound around a hard papery cylinder that is connect to the surround and is covered by the cone. It works by having a current run through and then reacts to the permanant magnet attached to the bottom of the basket. The reason why we have electricity is based on the rule that a magnetic field traveling through a coil will produce a current, the opposite of that rule is that if you run a current through a coil it will produce a magnetic field and this basically how a sub works, we run a current through the subs coil and there you go a magnetic field is produced.
