I actually read something a few months ago stating that when you first get new subs, you shouldn't drive them too hard and that you should give them a few hours to become broken in by playing your music at mid-levels. Is this true and how long should you really wait?

you dont need to break in your subs, however, giving them a few hours at mid level wont hurt anything though.
this is a process that salesman came up with in order to keep customers from returning thier equipment because it isnt loud. they will tell the customer to not turn it up loud for a week or two or that they arent loud yet because they arent broken in yet, either way, its just a tactic used to decieve the customer. but as i said, easing a woofer into full excursion wont hurt a thing, so you may do so if you like. just doit within the return/exchange period of the purchase date to see wether or not your happy with its performance, lol.
