Ok i had 1 15" kicker vr comp it was fine.. the other was blown.. so i have this one in a sealed box 2.2 cf.. with 500 watts wired at 4 ohms.. with a Rf1001bd amp...500w@4ohms...today my last kicker blew on me.. barely even punishing it.. gain at 3/4..started to smell the sub.. then the amp cut it off.. the sub now plays like a blown sub plays.. all distorted and scratchy.. Is this likely to happen since its brother sub blew on it. or is this amp just too much for it??? kickers have lost their reputation in my case...

Sounds like clipping to me.
Gain should never be past half, unless your deck
has the weakest RCA outputs in history.

You were over-driving(set the gains too high on...) the signal sent to your sub.
Its called "clipping" or a squaring-off of a sine
wave.
When you clip a signal...youre actually sending
quite a bit more power to the subs than you think.
10x as much in some cases...

remember, gains are not a volume knob....
You set the gains to match the signal coming
from your head unit...
for example...Alpine Head Units usually send
a 4 volt signal through the RCAs.
so, youd want to set the gains on the amps to 4v
aswell.

Properly setting gains is a very good
skill to learn, because it saves your equipment
from an early death.

to set your gains properly turn the volume on your head unit 3/4 the way up. Then with your amp already in the lowest position on the gain slowly turn the gain knob up untill you hear distortion. Then turn the gain slightly down and you're done.
