When figuring box volume do you subtract the sub volume?

yes, unless the company notes it you normally have to subtract it, along with the volume of the port in a ported enclosure.

ok thanks but I got one more. Should I face the sub up or out? How much room should there be between the sub and the trunk, the gap? What distance gets best results?
