Disconnecting speakers

I have recently installed new front speakers and a new head unit in my vehicle. Now, I want to make my rear speakers inaudible because they interfere with the soundstage. I have been told to simply set the fader to favor the fronts, but this has affected volume leveling from the head unit. My thought is to just cut the rear speaker wires running into the head unit. Will this work or just cause problems?

If it does work, where should I make the cut?
(before harness, in between harnesses, after harness)

Also, what should I do with the rest of the wire that is no longer connected?
(apply tape over the end to prevent interference, etc.)

Thanks in advance.

I'd disable them near the speakers....no, not with scissors. Make it so the next dude who has your car (if he chooses to) can enable the rears or add his own. You did the work. Why waste it?

I now feel moronic for having asked such a question. I din't even think to disable them near the speaker. Thanks
