Also, what's the real difference between getting a 5 channel amp (4 spks + 1 sub) compared to getting two separate amps for spkrs and subs?

depends on the amp you want.
the JL Audio 500/5 is a terrific amp for an all in one solution.
the advantage to separate amps mainly is more control over power levels.

I've decided to kick out my Kenwood mono amp (Didnt I just bought that 2 weeks ago??) and now I'm planning to just go for 5 channels. Hence the questions.

As you know, I'm running two pair of Alpine Type R components and a LA sub at 300watt rms.

Here's my two choices:

1. Kicker KX700.5 5-channel amplifier
2. Alpine MRV-F450 V12 5-channel amplifier

JL Audio isn't sold here and is only made to custom order. Overall, it'd be more expensive so I'm left with these two options.

Which of the two would you recommend and are there any reason for your recommendation?

either one would be a nice amplifier.
personally, I'd probably opt for the kicker.
