I'll post this in the next best place.

Turns out my head unit is starting to act up, I've only had it for four years, but have dropped the face a few times, so it's prob my fault. I don't care to fix it, even if I could.

On that note, I'm not in a rush, but I'd appreciate some suggestions on HUs for under $200. I do like the Van Man's HU. I wonder, does that have sub control in addition to the other features? I don't recall the model number but I think it was a JVC.

What I prefer:
CD/MP3 player
Ipod full speed control
USB (not necessary, but a cool feature)
preouts higher than 2V lol
Ability to change the display color
Mute feature

Anyway, I'm hoping I can get some good suggestions, as well, suggestions that I may find at a liquidation sale in Austin this weekend.

Thanks in advance fellas, you guys really are a great help.

Marcs HU is a kenwood. I am not a fan of anything made by kenwood.

JVC KD-AR880 has all the features you want. (need an adapter for ipod). It has the USB input on the front of the unit. $150 on ebay.

I run that unit and it works well. Although I wouldn't expect it to have the same quality internals as an Alpine though.

No USB but I doubt you can find a HU on that same par for that price very easily

I like Alpine the best by far also.

But I don't think you will find a HU with better features than that JVC for the price.

That is a nice clarion (another good company) but doesn't have the front USB. Thats what sold me on the JVC.

And you can run active on any setup with a crossover.

It does have USB support. There is a wire running from the back of the unit with a USB female end on it. This way you can put your thumbdrive anywhere.

Active crossovers cost extra money.

well M.S. I don't like the front usb, I think it looks kinda stupid, which makes me like the clarion more (i've always wanted a clarion, but could always get an alpine cheaper) hopefully I can find that clarion tomorrow at the 80% off liqudation sale going on at the crocket center tomorrow.

thanks for all the input guys, more suggestions would be great as well. but I will definately be looking for these HUs tomorrow.

Well if you don't like the front USB then I would go with an Alpine with the USB cable.

^wish I could find that deal.

Turns out that blow out sale was some propaganda, the place was worse than the worst flea market you have ever been to. Plus, they were making a killing just charging $7 per at the door. What a waste of $14....

The one I have is this.

http://www.electronicexpress.com/product?prod_id=9373

They are getting harder to find.
The thing that I love about this is the Phatnoise music manager that makes it "talk" the folders. It can be set up to say artist or song as well.

Plus 24 bit dacs.
imo, its a great unit.
I would choose it over anything else in that price range.

Marc, thanks for posting, I really liked that vid you posted of your HU. I'm interested in the voice feature it has.

Well, only some of the 2006 kenwoods had that feature. It due to the music media program it comes with, PhatNoise.
(Phatnoise is out of buisness)
The only other model i know for sure it works with is the X590, Kenwood KDC-MP832 and X890. But the x890 is so much better.
Some of the other things I like.
It displays artist, song, album, with usb or cd.
It has great tuning features.
Did I mention
It displays the Radio station, artist and song playing live.
It has the G force analizer thing
Can record your 1/4 mile times and HP.
(not sure how accurate those last few are, never tried them)
Hidden cd slot behind the motorized, detachable face plate.
Ipod ready..I think you need a cable, not sure as I dont sport an Ipod.
Reads 4 gig flashdrives..Like 1000 songs.
Fast usb reading.

Here it is for 220, Good price imo.

http://shopper.cnet.com/car-cd-changers/kenwood-kdc-x890/4014-6728_9-31802191.html#info-3

And a little info on the 24 bit dacs.

The wolfson (kenwood) is very close to the burr-brown (Pioneer) what I have read on them is that "Unlike some competing chips, the Wolfson DAC uses a low-order modulator that produces less high frequency noise, requiring fewer analogue output filter components" So using it means less fitering has to be added to the outputs. Are most people going to hear a difference, No

Plus I like the look of it. I hate that Cyclopse look of the Pioneer, Plus the feel so cheap. I think it will break when I mess with them in stores.

Man, Kenwood should send me a check for repping this thing.

eh, I figured it was worth going to see what, if any of the equipment they might have. the place it was held usually holds amatuer MMA bouts, and gun shows, so there was hope.
