How to Get Free Cable TV Legally ====================================== Intro The difference between cable TV and regular TV can be seen in cable TV's "official" name, Community Antenna Television (CATV). Basically, with CATV, the cable company installs a TV antenna, and a satellite dish at a good receiving location somewhere (they call this place a "head-end"), and then re-transmits the TV signals over cable to customers' homes and businesses. CATV systems use frequencies between 108-400 Mhz. to send their extra channels through the system. The mid-band (channels 14-22) is between 108-174 Mhz., super-band (23-36) is between 200-290 and hyper-band (37-53) is between 290-400 Mh. (These ranges are approximate.) To keep the CATV signals from interfering with the regular services on those frequencies. the cable company must keep leakage from their system down to an absolute minimum. This is easier said than done, and no matter how hard they try, CATV systems still leak to some extent, however minimal it may be. With equipment available from your local Radio Shack along with your TV, you can pick up low-level CATV signal leakage and get free CATV service without having to pay an installation fee or monthly service charges. This is all perfectly legal because you (currently) have the right to receive radio signals that come onto your domain, and in all reality the cable TV company shouldn't be letting these signals leak out of their system to begin with. When attempting this you should be aware that if your cable TV company is competent, you might not find an area in your neighborhood's outside plant that has enough leakage to get a good signal. Also, the way the government has been acting lately, one never knows when they might decide people who experiment with low-level RF signal reception are a threat to society. If such a thing does occur, make the necessary preparations before one of those UH-60 Blackhawks full of men with MP5SD3s lands on your lawn to bring you into "protective custody". How to Do It(!): Your wireless CATV reception station will need the following: - Fringe reception TV antenna - 10-20 db gain TV reception amplifier. Preferably one with an amplifier module that mounts near the antenna and a remote power supply. The two piece models offer better amplification as they amplify the signal before it gets noise from going through the coax. - Cable TV converter box - Cable descrambler for your system, if you want to receive "premium" channels (optional) - television (obviously) - Good quality RG-6 (or better) coax cable with connectors and 75-300 Ohm transformer if your TV doesn't have a 75 Ohm antenna input - TV antenna mast and other materials for mounting the antenna on your roof The system is put together as follows: ANTENNA | AMP | AMP CABLE +----POWER----CONV.---TV SUPPLY (If 2 pc. AMP) If your CATV descrambler is also a converter, then put it where the CABLE CONV. goes. If it is one of those types that descrambles channel 3 from a separate converter than hook it up in this fashion: CABLE ---CONV.---DESCRAMB----TV Once you have your system put together you have to find a leak to receive off of. The cable companies find leaks by driving down the road with a field strength meter. You can do this by walking under the cable and stopping where you see a peak on the meter. You can get a field strength meter for under $50 at Radio Shack. However, unless you use a tuned field strength meter you will also register any strong RF source. If you have a portable TV such as a Sony Watchman, you can tune to a channel that you normally won't receive and walk around until you get reception. On a side note, many of those portable TVs that use an analog tuning dial (as opposed to a channel selector knob) often are able to receive mid-band cable channels without a converter box. (The Sony Watchman Model FD-10A can.) To check if your portable TV can do this, examine the TV's VHF (Ch. 2-13) tuning selector. The mid-band capable TV's have only 1 band for VHF selection. To get mid-band with these TV's, simply tune between channels 6 and 7. You will also be able to pick up various types of voice commo from 88- 174 Mhz, although the selectivity and sensitivity on portable TV's suck for picking up narrow-band FM voice. You might fare better getting in some of the stronger FM broadcast stations on 88-108 though. When looking around for a good CATV leak, check under junction boxes where the main line is tapped to run cable drops to subscribers. They often degrade from being exposed to the elements. Also check around the homes of neighbors who you feel might have added extra CATV extensions to their houses wiring plant. If they have an antenna on their roof, then chances are they took the wiring plant that was hooked up to their antenna, and hooked it up to the cable system. The cable company generally uses good quality (expensive) materials when installing cable in someone's house. Most people when extending their system go to a department store or Radio Shack, and buy the cheapest (low quality) stuff they can find. This often leads to CATV leakage. Usually, the CATV company doesn't notice the leakage from a home unless it is really severe, as their detection equipment consists of a field strength meter and a 1/4 wave antenna. And since their readings are taken while going 40 MPH down a road, the signal from inside a house set back ? feet from the road is usually not strong enough for them to take notice. You on the other hand, are using an antenna that has 100 times more gain than theirs, and are amplifying the signal your antenna picks up even more. Once you've found a leak, aim your antenna at it. You should then be receiving free cable TV. The reception may not be perfect, but what do you expect for nothing? To get better reception, try one or more of the following: 1. Position your antenna closer to the source of the leak 2. Use a higher gain (bigger) antenna 3. Use a more powerful amplifier If your leak still isn't adequate or you haven't found one at all, then use the following technique. Be careful with this one, as it will royally piss off the cable co., FCC, FBI, FAA, NSA, PUC, and your local chamber of commerce if you're cable co. happens to a member. Not to mention that if you get caught, you could be charged with vandalism, theft of services and possibly sedition. You'll need the following: - straight pin - 8-10 foot length of magnet wire (length not critical) - "liquid black tape", Newskin (liquid bandage), or similar spray-on insulator material - soldering iron and solder - crazy glue To start, solder one end of the length of magnet wire to the blunt end of the straight pin. Then apply the insulator material to the straight pin, except for the pointed end. Let the insulator dry. The insulation on the pin is the important part, as it is needed to prevent you from accidently shorting out your neighbors cable line. ---======================================== | ^-solder here ^-magnet wire |<-apply insulating material | ^-leave tip clean When that's done take assembly and crazy glue over to your neighbor that has cable TV. Find a nice run of coax and push the pin in. Make sure the tip has good contact with the center conductor of the coax. Then unroll the magnet wire and crazy glue it to the coax in a way that it won't be noticeable. What you just did was add an antenna to your neighbors cable. You will now be able to enjoy the use of your wireless cable TV setup. The main problem with this setup is that the resulting "leak" will most assuredly be noticed by the cable co. who will come over and inspect everything. Your best bet is to install this device during the early evening and remove it the next morning before the repair crews hit the road. This way, it is less likely to be detected, unless your cable co.'s repair crews work at night. Chapter II: ----------- How to Piss Off Your Cable Company and Give Your Neighbors Free Cable TV ===================================== Radio Shack sells a device which will enable you to do just that. It will also let you use any standard TV for cable reception without having to purchase separate converters for each TV, or run coax. Go to R.S. and pick up a Model 15-1281 Cable TV Block Converter. This handy little device will take your mid and super band channels and convert them to UHF TV broadcast band frequencies. Hook it up to your cable system, and attach a good UHF TV antenna to the "TO UHF" f-connector. +-------------------+ ! RS 15-1281 ! ! ! ! CABLE TO TO ! ! IN VHF UHF ! ! * * * ! +---!------------!--+ To Cable ! ! To UHF System------+ +------ Antenna It is important that you use a good high gain antenna or you will not get any range. What you are doing is taking the cable channels 14-36 and retransmitting them over the normal UHF TV channels. This way, any non-cable compatible TV can receive them. The range isn't too great though. Expect about 300 feet or so under ideal conditions. Antenna type, height, placement, and the receiver set-up will have a lot to do in determining your range. There's a lot of possibilities for the experimenter here. Optionally, you might also want to contemplate adding a small 1-5 watt amplifier to the UHF output (Get the info from The Motorola RF Devices Manual, available for free from Motorola. I have a descrambler for the past 7 years , but lately, comcast has been slowly eliminating channels only to digital cable , this weekend they stopped the last of the one and only ppv channel, so it is off to comcast tomorrow to get digital cable box. Where should i buy the filters, on ebay? nad Train i wish you would post about clearing memory so i will know how to do it. I wish wally and others who know alot about digital cable would explain exactly how it works I am scared about getting digital cable and then a filter and the being busted out for ppv's. I am safe right now with my analog cable it is just that comcast knows its future is in digital and now they are smarter about catching theives. Is it really worth it, i don't know. I know i like to get the ppv boxing fights and now if i don't switch to digital, the last image i will have of a ppv fight is mike tyson, in lala land  Train, i am anxiously awaiting your response about clearing memory. ANy info about comcast digital cable in chicago would be greatly appreciated. |

MOTOROLA BOXES Note: If you have a phone line plugged into the back of the box, you must unplug it and leave it off Motorola DCT 2XXX Series (follow this procedure, but just in case there are more below): follow these instructions: Unplug the power, Hold the ON/OFF switch and guide button down and plug it back in, Hold for 15 seconds and release. After that unplug it when you go to sleep and leave it unpluged for 12 hours. The box should then be reset. If after the reset your box shows "0" on the LCD display, turn of your box from the power for about 5 minutes and then turn it back on, that should bring you back to channel 2 1. Keep everything plugged in (for now) 2. Power on TV and cable box 3. Now, unplug your cable box from the electrical outlet 4. One person must hold in the power and guide button together for about 20 seconds. (If you do not have the guide button-use the select button instead- Sometimes the SELECT button is located only on the remote.) 5. Have another person plug the cable box back into the electrical outlet while the first person holds the power and guide button 6. Continue to hold the power and guide button until you see the guide clear in approximately one minute (you will see this on the TV screen) 7. Once you see the TV go "haywire" the box has reset. Most users will experience their guides not being ready for about an hour. Don't be alarmed, it will come back. |

Train Unregistered guest | Well I've tried everything I could on both Comcast digital boxes, DCT6200 & DCT2224 and nothing has worked yet. Can't seem to make that Purchases # in the diagnostic menu disappear. The methods I tried ended up locking my box, ie holding Select & Power at the same time after plugging it in. Unless someone figures out a way, this filter I bought is useless. David-I suggest you find a person to help you try out your Guide method above as it requires 2 people. I have to recruit one of my friends to help me out and see if that works. If you let your box max out, that's bad idea as you WILL end up paying your cable co. those PPV fees because they will send a soft disconnect signal out to lock up your box and send a tech to visit you. It's inevitable you will pay the bill unless you find a way to reset that box and take the filter off ASAP. I only purchased 1 PPV and if I can't find a way to reset it, oh well. It's only 3.99 plus the filter cost to find out nothing works. If anyone else has been successful with the DCT224, PLEASE share it with us! |

ARA Unregistered guest | Well, all of this Unicable business could be funny if wasn't so sad. You guys talking about the right software for this unit. How are you going to load it to the unit? There is absolutely no any input device for it. No pushbuttons or keyboard and even IR remote is mostly not included. The Celerity website claims that everything is "optional". Assume, something is on the screen (unfortunately, I have the unit and played with it). How are you going to talk to it? I bought an universal remote and tried all possible codes. The unit does not respond. How are you going to connect the unit to your computer? All USB are a-type, i.e. the unit is the host, not a peripheral device. There is no cable USB A-A (not extender but male-male)exists. And if you even fool your computer and make the USB connection with a custom adapter it's still nor recognized. Not an unknown device, simply nothing, like it does not exist. How are you going to upload anything to the unit? Unfortunately unless somebody shows how to interface to the U4000 and it works, we can conclude that we got scammed. How to stop this scam to be sold? I understand that Paypal does not protect against fraud, only against no delivery. What the hell seller's "Guaranteed to work" means? That when you turn it on something sounds? Who can protect against functional fraud? |

I presume there should be return in the case of functional misrepresentation. The same way as the unit is not received. Maybe there is a mechanism on e-bay to claim something and I am not aware. |

Unless someone comes forward with testimony that they can reset the exact Motorola boxes, the days of free PPV are over. I bought the filter on Ebay but I'm telling you now it's a hopeless cause. They actually got smart on us. What you could try is getting just cable modem service and then see if you get free tv but I'm paying 6 month promo costs now that is actually less with tv and internet as internet is 57.95 or something like that a month regular cost, what a rip. |

I just had it happen to me, and I'm very unhappy with the results of my lost time, and eBay charging me fees that I now have to try and get retracted. While in my case, I had a reserve, many auctions out there do not, and eBay encourages no reserve with their 'hot item' section. To make matters worse, if you start your item off at a reasonable price, you'll get very few bids, and thus less people watching it during the final minutes of the auction. Normally, on eBay, the process works like this: You place a max bid for the item. Say the item is an antique vase. You like it, think its worth $100. Bidding opens at $2. You place a bid of $100. eBay gives you the opening bid at $2. You are protected up to $100. Another bidder. Bidder 2 comes along and he wants the vase for $50., so he bids that amount. Bidder 1 is still the high bidder, at $55 ($50 + $5 increment). So Bidder 2 comes back and bids again, this time at $105. Viola! Bidder 2 is now winning at $105 (he met your high bid of $100 + the $5 increment. More bids. Bidder 3 thinks the vase is worth $125, and bids that amount. He becomes high bidder with a price of $110. Bidder 4 thinks the vase is worth $130, and becomes high bidder posting that amount. The auction continues in this way until the end. Usually, in the last minutes, the bidding gets very heated, and the vase may end up selling for $600., which is close to what your local antique shop might charge. This is how the scam works: Same vase, opens at $2. Only this time, Bidder 1 bids $1000. The opening bid still shows only $2. He immediately follows with a false identity Bidder 2, at $990. Bidder 1 becomes high bidder at $995. Since this is more than you can get a similar product locally, and in a price range the average user is not going to spend lightly, there are no other bidders. Scam complete. 15 seconds before the auction ends, Bidder 2 rescinds his bid, the "high" price drops back to the opening bid of $2, and Bidder 1 wins at that amount. Unless the seller has a substantial reserve to protect his investment (which is discouraged by eBay) he will be obligated to sell the vase for $2. If he does have a reserve, he doesn't have to sell, but he still owes eBay posting fees and the auction was a waste for him. For those of you who will say that the seller is not obligated to sell -- two things: Seller must first be aware he was scammed. Tyrader Unregistered guest | I thought this was about hacking comcast. If you want to do that get a motorola from e-bay that matches the number series used in your area. When you get it check the firmware and see if it works in your area. Next, if you want to clear the receiver totally, open the box and remove the battery from the motherboard, just like clearing the cmos in a computer. With battery out turn on power switch (do not have it pluged in) to drain of any power left. Replace battery and it will be "cleaned". Now you have to find and load the firmware file for your area and load them. If you want all the channels get a filter, yes but you need to find the "beta" card. In the back of the receiver there is a card slot for tech to "test" all the channels. The beta card is like a 3m for cable. I could never find one or the programming to create one but it would be a way for someone to make a great profit, if located offshore. I gave up on cable 3 years ago but it might be worth looking at again. Wouldn't it be a kick if the old P3 cards could be converted to beta cards? Anyway, there is my brief input on this, for education only, of course. |

Of course we won't be able to return our money and will spend a little more but something has to be done against this unspeakable con-affair. We can put out worthless units one after another to bidding with a starting bid, say $200.00. But we will recommend the biddeds to read this forum before they make their decision. The point is that we are allowed to speak openly on e-bay if we ourselves sell the item. We can say all kind of negatives about these items as long as we are the sellers. How does this sound? |

Tyrader Unregistered guest | Wally, 1st is you can check on the receiver what software it has in the info section. You don't ask the dealer, you go to a friends house who has a subscription and check the model number and software they have. I don't know if you call it software or firmware but when the battery is pulled it will go back to the factory settings and program. All PPV were gone but so was the local software/firmware but the ID was still there. When you get a new cable box from the provider they hook up a serial type cable to the receiver and load that area software/firmware. You can do the above, as for the beta card, like I said, I was never able to find it or the software, just a lot of talk (like a P4 fix). Just adding the info, not selling or looking for a laugh, just hate comcast. Yes, I said for educational purposes only, because even though these companies can hack into our e-mail and posts without our permission or payment, it is illegal for people to get their signal without their permission or payment. Sorry if anyone gets confused by this, if someone else has tried this post your results. I respect your opinion Wally and thanks for the corrections and input. |

Naut Unregistered guest | SpHeRe31459 : Your Digital Cable or Satellite receiver (these can be generically referred to as a set-top box or STB) uses digital MPEG2 streams to include hundreds of channels. The digital streams are not technically compatible with TV tuners, they are translated into a compatible analog output on channel 3 or 4. Since TV capture cards include a tuner (for over the air, or basic analog cable) and s-video/composite plus R/L stereo inputs the much higher quality A/V outputs of your STB should be used to input to your capture card. The older coax style cable only supports low quality video and basic audio transmission and will make digital channels fallback to mono audio, thereby loosing the stereo or Dolby Surround available on most channels. Since a STB is able to handle much higher channel numbers than any tuner, channel changing must be done at the STB. To automate this from your HTPC you will need an IR blaster or a direct serial cable, depending on the STB used. Some STBs have a control port on the back that can be used to change channels, boxes that are known to have these are the Motorola DCT-2000 series used for digital cable, and most DirecTV receivers. For more information about controllable DirecTV receivers please see the Direct Serial Control Utility page. For the Motorola DCT-2000 series a standard 9-pin serial male to female cable is all that is needed. An IR blaster is a computer controller Infra-Red sending device, it is used to send IR codes that mimic those of your STBs remote. It must be positioned so that the IR receiver of your STB can "see" your IR blaster. For a list of IR blasters please see the appropriate section in the Proven Hardware List. Notes on the Motorola DCT-2000 series: For serial control to work first check the back of the cable box to see that you have the 9-pin serial port. Then you need to see if you have the right firmware for serial control; This can typically be found by pressing the "Menu" button on your remote and choosing "Setup" from the resulting menu, then select "Cable Box", then choose "Yes" to "See Configuration". This will show a quick rundown on the cable box: the firmware has to be version 7.54 for serial control to even possibly work, also confirmed is version 7.72. Other versions after 7.54 may work but have not been tested. If you have the correct firmware version then grab a standard male to female 9-pin serial cable, turn off the cable box and plug in the cable, now turn on the cable box and then try this applet originally made for SageTV, configure your COM port number and try to change channels. Serial control is often not enabled by cable providers.If you have the right firmware version but the serial control fails you can try to call your cable company and tell them you have TiVo and would like the serial control enabled (since everyone knows what a TiVo is and it can control the DCTs by serial this is the easiest way to explain what you need), see what they can do. Otherwise look into an IR blaster that fits your needs. Notes on the Actisys IR-200L: Do not install the Windows default IrDA driver, despite what the included manual says, as this enables the IR transmission for computer interfacing such as syncing to a PDA. This completely kills the remote interfacing support which is directly coded for in the remote control applications. Simply plug it into a serial port and tell the software you are using which COM port it is connected to. The IR-200L was never intended to be used as an IR blaster so while it is usable with many devices, it is generally not compatible with Dish Network receivers and BelVue Express cable boxes. Notes on specific PVR applications: Sage TV As of version 1.4 has inherent support for the USB-UIRT, Actisys IR-200L, and direct control of DirecTV receivers. For DCT-2000 control an applet, discussed here, has been written that uses the EXETuner Plugin. EDIT: curently the link for the DCT control applet is down so it is mirrored here. SnapStream/Beyond TV This popular PVR application has built-in support for serial control of DirecTV receivers, a list of compatible recivers can be found here, and the USB-UIRT. Support for the Actisys IR-200L is available with these instructions. Serial control of the DCT-2000 has been added via a plugin discussed here. An alternate DCT control guide using Girder can be found here. Got TV Got TV is covered in its own article posted in the Got TV forum of myHTPC.net Please note that there a few other IR blasters commonly used that while no inhernet support is included with the common PVR applications, support is easily added via Girder. Train Unregistered guest | I'm thinking that pulling a battery from a DCT2224 will probably lock up your box (0 will be all the way to the right) and you'll have to call up Comcast to send reset signal. I haven't tried it yet but other button holding combinations I tried either locked up my box or didn't clear the PPV memory. I think Comcast is tired of me calling to reset signals, lol |

Superman Unregistered guest | RFT GOLD works great for analog systems with Jerrold boxes when the signal is not blocked. To check attach a TV to cable without a cable box and see if you get a scrambled signal. If you do the RFT will work great on some stations. I noticed that Cablevision began to intermittently scramble the signal, and it screwed up a few stations. |

All that was left was the factory firmware. I could not get the local software to load so I had a "cleaned" box that did not work for channels in my area. Sorry but that was the end of my comcast testing. TY |
