Hi alex vouitsis, I can see that your are competent about these players, so if you can please help me, it would be great! I did all the steps to go into Recovery Mode ( I have the 1 gb Curtis Player), but nothing happens...no backlight, the Found New Hardware thing doesn't show up...I tried it on 3 PCs and it just doesn't work...W I tried it with the USB cable, I tried plugging the player itself...What could the problem be!

Hey. Alex I don't want to insult you or anything but even you have to admit that this is crazy. There are hundreds of different people here just on this one forum who are having troubles with there mp3 players and there all curtis brand. Sorry for the DOWN WITH CURTIS thing before because now i realize that there problem is most likely in sigmas crappy firmware. Curtis should really try and change this when they release there new players if they do.

By the way my 256 half died (the one that i accidentally used the wrong firmware in). now it turns on perfectally when on battery power but when its in usb, the backlight glows but nothing happens. This might sound a little weird but i sorta got mad at it wen it was in usb so u beat it on the floor for like 10 seconds straight and it came on, but with me not thinking i forgot to put new songs on it and now im having the same problem but beating it on the floor isnt working anymore. Alex could you help me with this?

Hello All

I have the HSBC 512mb Mp3 player that you get when opening a student account. As soon as i got it, it worked fine, then it asked me to reformat the player. After doing so the memory dropped to 119mb instead! Does anyone have any ideas how to fix this problem, or what caused it to happen? The driver CD doesn't seem to work either so i don't know how to fix it, it keeps saying something about the MIS.cab file not being there (even though it is) and forces me to abort the setup. Any help with that as well please?

Thanks

Hello Nasir,

You have to use the mscn audio player download utility to reflash the unit.
Have you installed it and have you tried to reflash your unit in recovery mode?

Alex

Tony,
The only reason this is a long active thread is because people care enough to share information and help one another.

I don't think banging it on the floor for ten seconds straight is the solution.

I think that this unit may be in need of some repair. LOL!

Contact me by email when you get a chance tomorrow and let's see what Curtis can do to help you out

Best Regards,
Alex

Did you try reformating the player?

I had the exact same problem on my Linux box.
I reformated the player and all was fine.

Edin,
the nag screen "The semaphore timeout period has expired" is showing up because the file copy retrial time out limit is being reached & hence the error

But this only occurs after your unit has frozen during file transfer.

It is possible that the unit is defective.
But first, re flash the firmware and then try again.
If the problem persists send us the unit and we will repair it for you

Best Regards,
Alex

Nomad,
U don't have to build a new one.

All u have to do is use the MSCN download utility and choose to format at the same time you refresh your firmware and your problem will be gone.

Hello JuliusM,
What make is it?

It's not a Curtis unit, so I'm not familiar but
But Curtis has a recovery mode to establish contact again between PC and dead Curtis Players.

Also, I have a 4 gig MPIO Rio Carbon with a built in battery that sometimes gives up on me from time to time and is dead to the world.
I have to reset it with a paper clip thru a tiny hole and then it wakes up again.

Might u have a reset button on your unit?

OK i have a 1GB curtis mp3 which i got on boxing day =/, and till 1 week ago it worked perfectly.Anyways suddenly alot of my songs started to sound alot like the supermario theme song and very low volume, even thought it was at max. Apparently only the "backround" sounds of the music gets played, and not the foreground music. Its probably the input jack thats the problem cuz when i align the headphone jack with the mp3, it sounds like mario, but if i put it into a 90 degree angle, it sounds good. And yes i have tried different headphones with same results. Any ideas on what i can do that can help besides bringing it back( <---always loses his recipets)

Hi,
I had the same problem as one of the Anonymous people. My Hsbc mp3 players capacity dropped to 119mb as well when i reformated it (it was 512mb). Is there any specific Software thats needed to reformate mp3 players properly or am i one of the few who had this problem when reformating it like it was a USB memory stick. Has anyone found a way to fix this? Thanks

There is a crystal oscillator which provides the clock pulse for the CPU.

Most likely the impact from the fall has broken a contact between the crystal and the board.

It does need to be serviced

First, you've got to find out who makes it.
Then get the firmware for it.
Take a digital image of the unit and post it here.
Someone should be able to help ID your unit

Ashish,

I did a search on your file name and found your file in another forum,
I'm not sure if this is the version that you need but I guess you have nothing to lose by trying it.

Try downloading it and installing it.

http://www.s1mp3.org/pt/downloads_fw.php

Don't forget to change the extension on the file to .bin before attempting to load iti into your machine

Alex

my unit's board name is 2051 ZH, sn 007 163.com
with Hynix memory.
Alex latest firmware is not available on the suggested website. I also tried a firmware related to this ID unit, but now my unit shows me write protection error.

According the suggested site we have to short circuit the memory chip. whether it is recommended or not. please suggest me.

Hi, I received a Curtis MP3 player 512 mb (MP514), the only battery that I can find that works in it is the one that came with it...it's almost dead. I have tried many AAA's, and made sure that they are the LR03 that is specified in the battery compartment. none work. I tried reformating and that did not help. Why is this happening? Is the MP3 player defective?

Hi, the problem is that the player will not turn on with any other battery other than the one that came with it, i have gone to future shop and the source and they have no idea why batteries (brand new) will not work and only the one that came with it will. they both tried their store brand and then back to the original one. i have tried no name, duracell and energizer. i just wont turn on.

People, with Curtis MP3 Players, i don't think you can put o n songs with descriptions. Right click your song, and hit Summary. if there is any text in the right hand part of the table above Comments, remember, the RIGHT part, not the left. if there is any text in the right hand part, click it and backspace.

Amanda,

Pls do the following :

RECOVERY MODE
To put any Curtis MP3 player into recovery mode and communicate with it,

First install the software on the CD disk's driver install folder.
The Sigmatel firmare downloading utility and bin file will be installed on your PC at this point.

Then put the player into Recovery Mode.

1)Remove the Battery from your MP3 player.

2)Press and hold the play or stop button for 5 seconds.

3)While still holding down the button, connect the player to the PC.

4)Release the button.

5)At this point the player will be detected by the found new hardware wizard and the new hardware wizard popup window will appear and disappear quickly.

TRANSFER THE NEW IMAGE
Go to Start, Programs, and select SigmaTel MSCN Audio Player.

Click on firmware download for the detection and image transfer to commence.

Reformatting during the firmware downloading is an option that should be checkmarked if formatting the unit was impossible before the reflashing process.

Everything should be back to normal at this point.

Let me know if this helps or if this is not your unit

Now it is detecting as player recovery mode and when I try with firmware download (both sigmatel and MUVO TX ), it is saying semophore error. Please help me to resolve it.

I'm not sure if you are still checking this but I'm going to try anyway because I'm going insane!!

I recently got an Curtis MP3 player (x-mas) and I've put up to 120 songs on it. I haven't had any probelms with it, until now though.

My probelm is this: everytime I try to put new songs on it (using Real Player) it won't allow me too. It doesn't matter what song it is, it just says "unsupported media type" when I click on "tell me more" it says this:

"The device does not support this type of file, and the file cannot be converted into a format supported by the device. This would occur if RealPlayer did not have the plug-in required to convert the file to a format supported by the device.

Note: If the file you are attempting to transfer is a .RAM file, the extension could be incorrect. Please try renaming the file to have a .RM extension and then transfer the file to your portable device."

First of all, I have no idea what that means...

And second of all, I tired to do what it told me (as best I could with hardly understanding any of it) but it just won't work.

I have my warrantly on it still, and I'm wondering, is this a probelm that's really easy to fix, or should I just take it back for a new one? I really don't want to because I really like it, and I don't want to have to put ALL my songs back on it again.

PLEASE HELP!!

Sorry I wrote so much:-)

Email response of possible:

Hi Alex,

I have a Curtis MP1003. Couldn't get it to work. Windows XP sees a new device, but when I open "My Computer" the window freezes. I tried reformatting. It seemed to go through the motions, but still nothing. When I plug it in to the USB, a screen comes up on the player and seems like it's communicating with the PC. It does this weather the battery is in or not. Please help. This is a gift for my 10 year old, and I wnat to load it up with her faves.

Thanks,

Dear friends,
I am trying to fix a problem in a Curtis MP3 that belongs to a friend of mine. He droped it in the ground and it stopped work. He doesn't have the instalation CD.
I tried to format/download the firmware but now my computer does not even recognize it as a mass storage device or something like this (It says: No device found). Does anyone know how to make it visible in the Windows Explorer again?

Hello my name is Kimberly and I bought a curtis mp3 player for christmas and I don't know what type it is but the S/N is 050990262 and it looks like this: <img> so I've been using it and everything was fine until one day I turned it on and it randomly said "INCORRECT FORMAT PLEASE REFORMAT THE PLAYER" and I don't have a installation CD or anything... then I plugged it in to the USB cord to connect to the computer and usually i go to my documents and click "removable disk DRIVE F" to put songs on it but now when i click on it, it says "please insert disk into DRIVE F" so it's like the mp3 player doesn't even exist .. now I really need to listen to it and I don't know what to do! please help me :-( !!!!

I tried to empty the player of any music, but when i hook it up to the usb, click my computer, and removable disk, it says either insert disk to drive G, or there is a I/O error.

DRIVERS FOR YOU!!!
Today I got the same problem with "Incorrect Format, Reformat Player". Than installed wrong driver, black screen, lost megabites...
I have 1Gb Curtis (MP1000) http://www.curtisint.com/web/products.asp?brand=CURTIS&subCat=MP3&catName=MP3%20 PLAYERS
This facken site has no direct links to driverd but I found how to download drivers. In my case it was http://www.curtisint.com/html/CustService/Manuals/CUR_MP1000_DR98.ZIP
I have XP, not 98, but it works!!! Insructions like Alex wrote before. Try to find your model and put in my link your digits instead 1000. I tried with some models, it works fine. Good luck!

Hi Alex,

I have a curtis 256mb mp3 player (MP257) and it plays just fine and I only have 50 some songs on it. The problem is that whenever I try to put new songs on it through Windows Media Player my device isn't supported. It always was supported before on Windows Media Player and I'd never had any problems with it. Also when I plug into the USB port it the thing that says 'New Hardware Found' doesn't come up. Please help. :-(

If I plug it into the usb port on my computer all the songs play fine. I tried formatting and reloading the songs. Didn't help. Anybody else have this problem?

Hi i am James QUAN .I am calling from Vietnam .I am asking you for a problem with my Curtis mp3 player ( MP2021) is not working any more . That i bought it just 2 weeks ago and seems to be dead... it won't turn on . Every time i turn it on it says that incorrect format reformat player . I tried reformating it by right clicking and going to format but after a while it says the computer is not fully able to format the player.could you please help me . I will be really thankfull.

CURTIS MP3 PLAYER SUCKS
Model MP1003
STMP3503 & TC58NVG Flash based
Manufacturer: Curtis MP1003, IGB, no FM
stuck at logo showing "computer to player" connection with "ver 2.600.100" in INVERTED (you needed a mirror to read it) Logo was larger than LCD as well.
Made in China, sold in North America...
my systems: Win98 and Win2K

I fixed mine after doing some research...(thanks to internet)

1.I pulled out sticker under battery and it revealed following info on chips:
SigmaTel STMP3503 (MP3 market is dominated by them and they SUCK big time!!)
Toshiba XT8858 TC58NVG3D4CTG00 (1GB NAND Flash: they SUCK too!!)

2. since it was a sigmatel chip based player, all I did was to experiment with various versions of sigmatel MSCN players (firmwares available at various websites for look-a-like players with same chip..STMP35xx) :but none worked... including those ones available at curtisint*com (They dont offer it under support/download section).

3.I also tried installing wrong(supplied)version of firmware CD (2.600.100) AND switching these files resource.bin, stmpsys.sb, usbmsc.sb, bootmanger.sb and hostrsc.bin: again didnt worked..

4. finally, I found firmware zip file CUR_MP3257_UPDATE_EN.Zip under FAQ section at curtisint's web...it was for 256MB player but after extraction it showed similar files with wrong-supplied CD which came with player.
this zip is incomplete: you cant install it.

5. STMP35xx are pretty forgiving, whenever my player turned dead after flashing with other versions of MSCN players, I was able to bring it back to life using wrong-version-CD firmware on another computer with Win2K. either by simply connecting it (it would show up as a drive) or by holding play button (without battery) as suggested in the manual.

6. I had better luck with MPIO's MB100 MSCN firmware which was more latest and better as it would find and lock the player. so I uploaded it and switched all of its files with zip found in step5. it was basically copying and dropping them on program folder "Mscn" under Sigmatel, and saying yes to all, when replacing files.
After Flashing this time, guess what: VOILA!!!!

I will NEVER buy anything CURTIS or No-brand names ever again. I wasted lots of my time: but I'm glad, I learned my lesson.

I bought a sylvania SMP1015 which I am told is really a Curtis SMP1015 and the picture in the curtis manual looks the same.
At first the system recognized the player to the extent of asking if I wanted to use windows media player to manage it but the media player was never able to detect it.
I tried to use the hardware manager to get it working but it said the drivers in use were the
best available and the system was still unable to locate the player.
I loaded the CD that came with the player and ran the setup program but no joy.
I tried the recovery mode process and it worked up to the point where the hardware wzard was supposed to pop up and then disappear, it stayed so I ran the hardware wizard and it loaded the "correct"
driver but still didn't recognize the MP3 player
on the "my computer" screen. I tried the recovery process again and the hardware wizard didn't appear that time.
I'm running XP home on one system and XP pro on another neither of which recognizes the MP3 player.
I pulled up all programs and ran a search for SigmaTel MSCN Audio Player and it didn't pop up on the installation CD that came with the player or on my XP systems although I guess I'd have to get the system to recognize the player before I could download anything into it.
Is there a website with the drivers and repair info for these systems? All I find at the Curtis
site is the users manual that came with the player.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

This is from the Curtis support page.

http://www.curtisint.com/support/troubleShooting.asp

Model Number Problems & Solutions

All Portable MP3 Players

Q: I cannot play some WMA files.

Some WMA (Windows Media) files have DRM technology (Direct Rights Management). These music files are coded with certain access rights that will enable or disable the ability to copy or share that particular song. These WMA files cannot be copied to your MP3 player using the Drag And Drop method. You need to open the file using a Windows Media Player (available for free download from http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/download/). Once opened, create your playlist. Then select "File" on top menu. Choose "Copy" then "to Portable Device" function. This will enable you to listen to your WMA files on your MP3 player.

All Portable MP3 Players

Q: LCD displays nothing after turning on the MP3 player.

Please verify the battery by reinserting the battery correctly or replacing it. If this does not help, you will have to put the player in recovery mode and refresh the firmware. First, do the setup/download for "Sigmatel MSCN Audio Player" from your CD into your computer. Then, please follow the instructions in the Trouble Shooting section from your CD.

All Portable MP3 Players

Q: Reformatting on the MAC OS 10 platform does not work.

To reformat all MP3 players on this platform please do the following. Connect the MP3 player to the USB port. Double click on the MP3 player hard drive icon that appears on the desktop. Double click on Applications. Double click on Utilities. Double click on the Disk Utility Icon. Select from the Source List on the left hand side of the MP3 player then select Erase Disk and reformat the MP3 player.

I have the MP1004 1gb mp3 player. Is there any way to bypass the song limit of 400 songs? I have way over 400 songs on the player; however, I can not access the songs that are past the 400th song. When I look in the music folder it says "Dir Empty". However, when I view the files on my PC, I can clearly see that the mp3 files are there. Your assistance to help me bypass the song cap will be greatly appreciated. Please email me as soon as possible. Thank You.

My MP1000 stopped while on batteries (LCD OFF), although it works for file transfers on USB (LCD ON - SHOWING READY)

I read CURTIS troubleshoot plus this forum and did exactly the same thing. I attached it to USB in a recovery mode and updated it with the latest firmware from CURTIS website.

Still it doesn't work on batteries. The LCD is off and it looks like dead but when it is attached to USB the LCD is on and it shows the file transfers.

Is it something with the firmware or a hardware problem?

Hi,Alex My curtis mp3 player ,which is MPK1040 and was bought from future shop last year,is not working any more.Every time I turn it on, only the CURTIS picture flashes again and again............,nothing else goes on.I tried to find the solution from your website, they say ' you will have to put the player in recovery mode and refresh the firmware. First, do the setup/download for "Sigmatel MSCN Audio Player" from your CD into your computer. Then, please follow the instructions in the Trouble Shooting section from your CD. ' . Unfortunately, there is no such software in the mini CD which was sent to me with the player. Could tell me what I can do in the situation that I will leave Canada this month? Hello,

I have an SMP 1015. i got my computer to recognize it and I even put music on it and can listen to it on my computer.

The trouble is, it won't turn on. It has a battery and it won't even turn on when plugged into the computer. I tried reformatting it, FAT, but no luck.

I saw other people had similar problems but I didn't see the solution.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hello
My daughter has a curtis mpk4099uk, we had the usual problems, not being able to charge the phone initially (sorted that) and problems with the song format (partner sorted that). All had been working fine for the last 2 weeks, but now the unit has lost all the songs and pictures my daughter put on the unit. She is quite upset, have you any suggests on how to restore what I assume is still on the disk but no longer showing on the directories?
