Bought an old naim 42/110 in which the sound out of one speaker is much louder than the other speaker. The balance knob does not correct the imbalance. Someone suggested that it could be a capacitor problem, and another suggested trying new connecting cables. Anyone experienced such a problem before?

.

I'm guessing the people who suggested things aren't technicians. Level changes are typically the result of added resistance to the signal path. Unless a cable is clearly defective it cannot add that much resistance. Caps are unlikely though that doesn't mean a cap might not be defective in a circuit with other components. Often one component fails due to another component's failing and therefore the downstream component is delivered the wrong Voltage.

The answer here is simple; if you don't have any idea what at fault and you have no tools to troubleshoot the circuits, you are in no position to try to repair the amp. Keep your hands out of a potentially harmful situation and let a qualified tech troubleshoot the amp. Ask for an estimate of repair costs before OK'ing any work.
