Optical VS Coaxial VS Component VS RCA?

Here is a point of confusion to me, I hook my DVD/CD player up to my Sony STR-DE685 receiver via an optical cable. I have always been under the impression that an optical cable would produce better sound quality, considering that a laser can switch on and off 100 times more than copper wire in any given amount of time, thus, it has the cabability to transfer more data.

However, my owners manual tells me otherwise. It says that the preferred method to hooking up my devices is coaxial. It fails to mention why.

I have a hard time beleiving this, can anyone tell me what connection is better and possibly why between Optical, Coaxial, Component, or RCA?
