Is a pre-amp a necessity?

I just picked up a new receiver and soon found that my old turntable can barely be heard on it. Digging around the threads on this site I discovered that this is due to the fact that my new amp does not have a 'Phono' input. The recommended solution for this problem is to pick up a phono pre-amp to increase the signal from the turntable.

What I am wondering is if a pre-amp is necessary if I picked up a new turntable. Specifically, I was thinking of picking up the Stanton T-80 as it has an SPDIF output that I thought would work perfectly with my digital receiver. Will the newer models such as this still require a pre-amp and if I want to use the digital output will a special pre-amp be required?

Thanks
