Is it my speakers or my amp?

i have a 10 year old Onkyo receiver and 10 year old Bose speakers. and i like to listen to music loud. lately when i reach a certain decibel level one of the speakers goes out. if i turn the volume down to zero, wait 5 secs and turn volume back up, the sound comes back. so is it my speakers that no longer can handle the loudness or my receiver? i haven't had problems in the past and i'm willing to buy whatever new piece that may need to be replaced

My first guess would be the amp. If you can, try testing the speakers on a different amp to see if the same thing happens. Or, if the same channel goes out, swap the speaker wires around and see if the same channel goes out again.
