Please help me to decide what to buy for $600 or just a little bit more.
What 5.1 speakers?
What receiver?

rmihai,

You are going to have to give us a little more than that.

1. Is the $600 for everything, or just for a receiver?

2. What is your room size?

3. What features are you looking for?

4. Does there need to be room in the budget for a DVD player?

5. What brands do your local dealers sell?

6. Will you ever want to upgrade to 6.1 or 7.1?

Hm, sorry

so the budget is for receiver and speakers only.
I am not looking for features but rather for sound quality.
I have a DVD player already - I don't need something else.
I don't think I will upgrade to 6.1 or more in the next 10 years.

Thank you

Not many good choices at that price point. Hopefully you're talking US$. An Onkyo 501 receiver and Athena Technologies Micra 5.1 speaker system (available as a close-out at Best Buy) would be near that price point and make a decent system. Or you could raise your budget to $1000 for more attractive options.

rmihai,

$.02 has made an excellent recommendation. In your price range, I don't think you can do any better. Depsite their relatively low price, Athena speakers are very well made and are a great buy for the money. I think they would pair well with an Onkyo receiver. I can't remember the website (elitefan help me out), but I think I remember the Onkyo 500 or 501 being available for under $200. These receivers aren't long on power or features, but in your price range, they are really the best option.

If I may, let me suggest something else. It may be better for you to buy a home theater in stages. You can start by getting a receiver and a set of two speakers, and adding the rest as your finances allow. In the end, you will have a much better system than you would if you buy it all at once. Read the thread below. Granted, this person is playing with more money, but the general idea is the same.
