I have only heard the CHT-12 in a store to try to decide if I wanted to order a CHT-15. I wasn't impressed at all. However, I am more than impressed with the Hsu STF-3 which I did get. Adds great punch to music without muddiness at all.
Not sure why the receiver matters, but mine is an h/k avr-325.

HSU STF-2 is going to SMOKE the Velodyne CHT-10/12!! get both of them and try for yourself.
Hsu is a far better sub than the Velodyne CH series. SVS is also well known for making wonderful subs, so the new PB10-ISD, suggested by Mr. Martin, looks very interesting.
