I have a H/K 630 reciever and was wondering should i use a fiber optic cable or a coaxial with my dvd player?

George,

Either is perfectly okay if you are allowing the reciever to do the decoding, however seeing as you are in tha DVD-Audio & SACD section, if you are relating your question to these formats then you would be using the analogue outs of your DVD player to the analogue inputs of your receiver.

Assuming we are not talking DVD Audio or SACD, what would be the audible difference between the two connections?

What is the advantage of the fiber optic cable outside of less exposure to elements at point of contact?

Optical cable is considered immune to electric and magnetic interference.

George,

I agree with all the above replies, and think you are in expert company here. If still in doubt, and you'd like some more points of view, there was a long and heated discussion of this issue on Coaxial Digital Connection Vs Digital Fiber Optical Connection?

I personally prefer coaxial. Simply sounds better on my equipment.

Here's a negative opinion on optical (Scroll down to Toslink):
