Get a USB based soundcard with multichannel sound; the laptop probably has a standard stereo earphone jack. Then go from there. A true surround speaker system might then be possible--the soundcard will also provide better sound, guaranteed.

People seem to be loving Logitech, even though I still think they're poorly made and don't sound so great. I got a set of Bose MediaMates off ebay like new for $50 and they sound fantastic-no need for a sub, even. Everything else Bose makes is trash, but the Mediamates are actually quite the contrary.

I have the Bose Companion 3 speakers, which are quite a step above the MediaMates. Bose multimedia speakers are quite good.

The Companion 3 sells for $249, which is higher than your price range.

However, the Companion 2 (replacement for the Mediamates) are selling for $99.
