drhiberd Unregistered guest | I believe that camera has analog to digital conversion. Go to sonystyle.com and check it out. It will come with an audio/video cable that you plug into the camera and vcr and you can record with the camcorder. Let me know if this helps |

Unregistered guest | I, too, have the identical camera mentioned here (Sony Digital 8 DCR-TRV460, and can't get it to record FROM my JVC VCR to the camera. The operations manual explains how to do it on page 88, and I have followed it to the letter, but I still can't see anything on the camera! I've changed channels from 3 to AU (line in), and adjusted numerous settings on both the VCR and the camera, but can't figure it out. Help me too, please! Bronze Member Username: GromitPost Number: 18 Registered: Mar-05 | Folks, I may be able to shed some light here, based on my own experiences. 1) A lot of modern DV camcorders now have the ability to make DV recording from an analogue video input (my Canon does for example). Your instruction manuals should have instructions on how to do this. 2) Some modern DV camcorders also have the ability to do realtime "passthrough" from analogue video to DV out (again, my Canon does). This offers the enticing possibility of creating avi files direct on your computer from an analogue source, without even the need for a TV/video capture card. 3) There may be catches. For example, my Canon can ONLY do the "passthrough" trick if there is NO TAPE loaded, but guess what, my PC software won't try to capture DV if it spots that the camera doesn't have a tape loaded. Catch 22. 4) So long as your target material doesn't exceed the length of a tape, a more robust solution is to record into your camcorder first, then transfer to your PC (or, if you have a few 00 $ spare, buy a DVD recorder) Hope that helps with at least some of the questions Cheers! |

Bronze Member Username: GromitPost Number: 35 Registered: Mar-05 | I'm assuming that your user guide indicates that it IS possible to record to your handycam from analogue external sources such as TV. That being so, and assuming you have indeed followed the user guide correctly, then it is time to follow normal debugging procedures: 1) try a different video source into your handycam, such as your set-top VCR. Maybe your TV is not really outputting video where you think it is 2) try connecting a VCR to the connections you are using right now for the handycam and record from "aux" or "L1" or whatever you specify on the VCR for external recording. You should be able to use the results from the above tests with normal logic to work out where your problem lies. Hope that helps. |

JKHopkins Unregistered guest | Thanks very much. That does help by ruling out one approach. But I still need help. Here's the whole story. I'm using the Pixela ImageMixer software that came with my Camcorder to edit movies I've filmed, and I've gotten reasonably comfortable with it. I also want to convert some old videos to DVD, using the same software to edit them first. First I bought the Sony DVDirect Video Recordable DVD Drive. I was told it would create MPEG files, but it outputs only a collection of .IFO, .BUP and .VOB files onto a DVD. My ImageMixer software can only import MPEG files. Sony Tech Support told me I now have to use ripping software to convert the output files to MPEG format onto a new DVD. So for each VHS capture, I would have to create two temporary DVD disks. Seems way too cumbersome. So I decided it would be simpler to use the camcorder as a capture device and edit the output just like the movies I've filmed, but my camcorder model requires iLink for that. We do have a DVD recorder, but it doesn't have iLink output. Before I go out and buy yet another piece of equipment, what's the simplest & cheapest way to get MPEG files from my old videos? |

You only need a basic one and I'm sure it will be less than $100 unless you reside in Hong Kong. http://www.leadtek.com/multimedia/winfast_vc100xp_1.html Ripping software would almost certainly place MPEG files onto your hard disk, so I do believe that each capture would only require a single disk. By the way, Ulead Moviefactory (which is a DVD authoring programme) can extract MPEG clips from an existing (non-encrypted) DVD, for compilation into a new DVD, with even simple editing (trimming) possible as part of the authoring process. Bottom line is that if you are happy with Imagemaker, your cheapest way is to get the capture card. Of course, that also will use your hard disk rather blank DVDs as the interim step. Make sure you PC meets the system requirements for video capture - I'd recommend more than 1GHz processor and at least 20G free disk space. Cheers |

But read the instructions carefully as it's not always intuitive: for example, you normally have to put the camcorder in PLAY mode before you start recording. timstfugaysiteomg Unregistered guest | Canon ZR-80. I found it refurbished for around $200 at PCRush.com This will take a while but i'm willing to lay it out for you. These are the things you will need: Digital Camera VCR TV RF cables red, white, and yellow cables (4get what you call em) patience firewire firewire card Let's get started. First you must hook up your camera to the VCR. You can do this via those red, yellow, and white cables. I'm not completely positive if they go in the video in or video out. Play around with it if it doesn't work. Then you must also hook up your Xbox to the VCR. Again, play around with the ports to find out which one works. The TV needs to be set not on VCR input but on normal TV input. Next you need to run an RF cable from you VCR to your TV. This will complete the network. I know it's complicated but that's how i do it. The TV should be on channel 3 or whatever channel it works on. If you camera has a rec/pause button on it, press it after everything is hooked up. When you are ready to begin recording, simply press "play". When you are done press "stop". To record again follow the same steps i told you above. You will always have to press the "rec/pause" button first. Then "play". Hope this helps. |

But I can tell you this: the analogue signal output from your VCR is, to all intents and purposes (quality aside) identical to that output by your TV. So if you can make recording work with the VCR, then just substitute the TV for the VCR and the job is done. Does that help? |

(a/v?) i am trying to record video game footage from my 360 to the camcorder so i can get it on my computer. i have a a/v splitter hooked up to my tv and vcr, so what i tried to do was hook my 360 into the vcr input, take an a/v cord from the vcr output to the splitter, then plug my camera's a/v cord thing into the output of the splitter. problem is, nothing shows up on my camera and i dont know why. in the manual it says that you can record from the camera to the vcr (and doesnt say about the other way around), but i dont see why it cant work the other way around. i also tried using the camera as kind of an adapter, using the same set up as before, and then plugging a usb cable from the camera to my laptop. this did not work either (the camera has a firewire port, but my laptop doesnt). i dont think the problem with that is the usb part. i have no idea of any way to solve this, but if anyone does, i'll be greatly appreciative. (and sorry about this monster post) |
