i will be having old 8mm films converted to minidv and will then need a way to get the information on the minidv tapes into my imac. what should i be looking for in a camcorder to do the job? will the transfer be affected by the quality of the camcorder itself? any information that will help me is greatly appreciated. slamm

I'm not sure why you are doing it this way.

Why can't the video production company go directly from the 8mm films to DVD ?

they can. i'm told that that isn't the most desirable however. actually i was told to ask for the conversion to go onto a hard drive but the local company can't do that. most of my reading so far indicates that the minidv format is the best for archiving. the minidv format saves more information and the dvd is a more compressed format. i'm probably not too good at explaining since i'm just starting to learn about this aspect of things. i need to edit the films once they're on my computer. does that help?

For miniDV, you'd need to connect camcorder up to PC using Firewire.

I'm still not convinced this is really buying you anything, because pro equipment is better than anything you have on hand.

You can also edit MPEG-2 which is what is on DVD.

But, whatever ...
