"I do too Paul but in Iraq (like in Vietnam) they're fighting an insurgency in a guerilla war, in WWII it was conventional armies going at it in the open.

Two very different ballgames, and despite all of our world-best technology and super-trained troops, the bottom line is that it's friggin' hard to win a guerilla war of any kind in any place at any time."
=========================================
Sorry Eddie,
You're a clueless little moron if you dont see whats happening.

From what I see, no truth that slaps you in the face can wake you up, so I dont expect to save you from your ignorance. We could kill those muther f*cking leaches in no time but the PC police wont let us fight and do whats necessary.

You stupid f*cking DUMMs make me sick.

Either you're a clueless dirtbag moron, or you have no clue what it took to win WWII...... Had we fought like we do today against the Japs and Hitler, we would have lost WWII, and it wouldnt even have been close. How do you expect our fighting men and women to do their jobs under the current restrictions???

And how would you suggest we do that without violating the values (not to mention international law that the US had a part in creating) that separate us from "the Japs and Hitler" Paul?

So I guess what you're saying is that you would prefer that we were more like Hitler? Perhaps we should put all Iraqis in death camps? Or just carpet bomb the whole country with nukes?Unfortunately what you don't seem to realize Paul is that we are not the only country in the world. There are reprecussions to our actions. Do you really think we can afford to piss off the whole world?

Foolish people like yourself make me sick Paul.

World peace will remain an elusive dream while there are people like Paul on this planet - regardless of what side of the political fence one stands.

I don't like my neighbour - should I shoot him?

Hell, that pathetic excuse for a president let the enemy attack American soil before his 'sissy' pacifist 'wafflehouse' neutral crippled azz would lift his finger while the N@zis murdered millions and he looked the other way. You think he really didnt know what was happening???....LOL....keep kidding yourself!!

Yea, he brought our nation out of depression, but c'mon..........as if a world war wouldnt???

OK......

back to bed.....

stupid DUMMS....so long as they keep losing elections and making these ignorant statements...
Im happy....
http://www.nbc4i.com/news/4583587/detail.html
Those stupid idiots are clueless, and will keep losing elections until they reinvent themselves.

Im thankful the DUMBs voted that mouth-frothing fool to serve as party leader......hahahahahaha

Can the DUMBs be that stupid??? When will they reinvent themselves?? Will they wait until the senate finally hits 60-40 and final desperation sets in???

Luckily, a huge batch of 'quality' judges will be sworn in within the next 4 years:-) Thanfully, slick Willies 'extremist group' nominations will fade into the background before very long.

YOu say filla-bust-a-what??? The DUMBs will get steamrolled if they try, and that's why they caved like little girls over the past nominations. They did what was right because if they didnt cave in like little girls, they would have been steamrolled and stripped of what little power they had.

So for that........I say congrats to the DUMBs....

Good move on their part by Caving-in. If they didnt cave, they would have been squashed. Go figure considering very few are left.........most have been voted out of office.

> I don't think politics should be discussed in here.

LOL saying that Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan, and Lebanaon are GUERRILLA wars as opposed to CONVENTIONAL wars like WWII is not really political...anybody with half a brain (especially military strategists) can see that distinction as clear as day.

oh well, Paul shall be Paul.

I'll bet he doesn't even know that the American Revolution was also a GUERRILLA war in large part...and that it was OUR side which beat a bigger, better armed and better trained (British) army by using many of the same hit-and-run tactics the Iraqis and Viet Cong use.

Hard to reason with someone who swallows everything he hears on AM (=Angry Mongoloid) Talk Radio...lol

Talk Radio (based on true events)

Other decent Oliver Stone movies:

Salvador

Natural Born Killers (the opening scene where Juliette Lewis punches out the h*rny redneck was hilarious)

Platoon

All The President's Men

Good one, Andy! Yep back in the day when the Washington press corps had not yet been reduced to a bunch of cowering puppets and brown-nosers by media consolidation and Machiavellian presidents.

If Watergate happened today, Nixon would've gotten off scot free while the so-called "liberal" (my @ss) media continues to fixate on life-or-death stories like the Michael Jackson trial and Paris Hilton's latest airhead moments.

Stone is a complete wacko and socialist pig, and I couldnt have been happier to see his movie "Alexander" completely flop at the box office. Have you heard his whiny excuses for the bad showing???....LOL, quite hilarious stuff!!

I did like Platoon though, but most of his other stuff is rubbish, and his glory days have long since passed him by......

When was his last big hit???....In the 1980s??

BTW, I thought Natural Born Killers was rubbish, and I could only bear to watch about half before turning off the movie.

I didn't even bother to watch "Alexander"---have to agree that his best work was a long time ago.

"Full Metal Jacket" is not a Stone movie, but directed by a TRUE master of cinema: Stanley Kubrick.

Speaking of whom, here's my favorite Kubrick movies:

Dr. Strangelove (hilarious absurdist comedy)

A Clockwork Orange (masterpiece!)

Eyes Wide Shut (oh my God, Tom Cruise is actually a competent actor here...or at least, a lot better than his usual self. Loved the lingering full-length unclothed shot of Nicole Kidman...who needs breasts with a derriere like that? The jazz score with Shostakovich is also outstanding.)

Full Metal Jacket (I agree with Jay Carr of the Boston Globe, who called it "the greatest war movie of all time")

The Shining (Jack Nicholson's finest performance, and the absolute SCARIEST film I have ever seen, doesn't rely on gore or computer animation!)

Lolita (much better and truer to the original novel than the recent re-make, but it does require a good strong espresso to sit through the last 1/3)

BTW,
of the movies stone written by stone, these are the only ones I thought were worth watching.

1.platoon-good anti-war movie
2.The Firm-socialist propaganda at it's best

everything else was complete rubbish and not worthy of mention.

He was involved in a few good movies in other ways, but those are the only ones written by him that werent garbage.

Full metal jacket the best war movie of all time???

Are those guys nuts?? Granted, I liked the movie, but to call it the greatest????? Geez....

Im not sure what year he claimed it was the best, but the "Band of Brothers" wins hands down in my book. A distant second place would be Saving Private Ryan, and all the rest are way beneath.

Blade Runner (the producer's cut, not the bloated and slow director's cut)

Martin Scorsese films:

Raging Bull (Scorsese and DeNiro's finest, total classic: funny, sad, scary, gripping)

Taxi Driver (hey anything that can help get Reagan shot has to be a great film! just kidding Paul)

Goodfellas (still the most realistic mob movie ever made, with some stinging commentary about "the suckers who play by the rules")

After Hours (a Freudian classic...one of the most original films of all time, totally worth owning and can stand up to repeated viewings)

Mean Streets (better with a little caffeine)

Cape Fear (fairly entertaining)

Kundun (remarkably stately, elegant film about the Dalai Lama)

Gangs of NY (entertaining but not his best)

Casino (ok, kind of rips off "Goodfellas")

no Paul, "The Firm" was directed by Sydney Pollack not Oliver Stone.

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0792164962

The reason FMJ is such a unique war movie is because it shows the psychological PROGRAMMING that soldiers go through (the first half in Marine boot camp---several of my friends who are ex-Marines confirmed that it was indeed a realistic portrayal).

The second half of the movie when they are in VN is sudden then slow, erratic, absurd, unpredictable, and surreal (it was shot in the UK of all places, with imported palm trees)---exactly how most soldiers describe their experience in the field: lots of boredom while waiting for action, lots of tedium punctuated by quick random and unpredictable bursts of pure terror and adrenaline when they come under fire.

Dame straight too, there is another one with Timothy Hutton where he's playing, based on a true story of an FBI agent that was a mole working for the USSR, and the taking lots of money from his Russian friend in exchange for US documents the film was around the 1990's?

Not sure if you know, wait a second I'm just going to pop on over to IMDb for a search on Timothy Hutton, and hear it is Aldrich Ames: Traitor Within http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0174454/ dame good performance for the academy award winner dame good.

oh yeah JFK wasn't bad either, just had somewhat kooky conspiracy theories behind it.

Other presidential movie I liked:

"Nixon" (with Anthony Hopkins as Tricky Dick)

Nixon was a very different kind of conservative then what you have today. He actually had a brain for one thing, instead of relying on advisors for everything. And he was not a stooge of the religious fruitcakes.

Wish somebody would make a film about Barry Goldwater...now that was a thinking man's conservative. Kind of like the difference between a half-intelligent conservative magazine like the National Review and the total half-wit Moonie-run Washington Times or Faux News.

thanks Jim, just added that to my Netflix list. Have always loved Peter Sellers, that man is a comic genius!

Speaking of fascinating and strikingly original movies, Spike Jonze is DA MAN!!!

"Being John Malkovich" --- this movie has so many intricate layers and unanswered questions you can watch it dozens of times and it never gets old. That Catherine Keener is the most obnoxious/sexy poota...yum! MASTERPIECE

"Adaptation" --- with one of my favorite actors, Nicholas Cage, at his best: 5 STARS! Beautifully satirizes how and why most Hollywood films turn out to be such absolute dogsh*t. MASTERPIECE

Wow........
I had an incredible movie marathon last night. I started things off in the late afternoon by watching 'Batman Returns' with my daughter.

Then, I watched the first three episodes(disc1) of the Sopranos season five with the Mrs.

Then finished things off 'solo' by watching 'The 13th Floor'.(one of my cult favorites)

And yes, the beer was extra cold, and the pizza couldnt have tasted better:-)

Ahhhhh.....another successful Friday night 'in' at the movies is in the books. Somehow, I believe the experience would be much, much less, had I been forced to watch these movies on a halfpint 20" and listened to them through petite paperweight sized speakers.

Wow, and I thought I had it bad. I've never watched movies for that long, ever.

My longest ever marathon was watching the entire "Band of Brothers" series in one sitting which took about 11 hours.(Pauses included)

22 hours??? You sure you arent tacking on a few extra hours for good measure?? For me, anything more than 2 movies is considered a marathon, and I virtually never go beyond 3. Usually, after three.....I've had enough:-)

BTW as superb as Peter Jackson's film adaptations are---and I saw all 3 at the cinema so no smart-aleck comments about my humble 20" Panny now Paul---reading the original books was still better!

"Hallow man"

This is a son of a b!tch of a movie, the story of a man who sales his soul to the devil, with horrific events, while are insane scientist later on goes on the rampage killing one by one all his co-workers in the typical Paul Verhoeven fashion, cool there are lots of clichés references to other Verhoeven films.

And some cheeky sex scenes that look tasty impartial the breast scene, where using the power to grope for a feel of tit cool.

That's strange, I just clicked the first link and it was fine. It just showed a Panny 20" CRT weighing in at 64lbs is all.

Anyways, you really should try "Trainspotting"---it's nothing at all like your stereotypical British movie with a bunch of stiff upper lip type characters twiddling their thumbs and straining to make clever conversation in some Victorian mansion about 200 years ago. Most definitely not "Masterpiece Theater with Alistar Cooke" let me assure you.

We're talking about brash, in your face, yes ACTION-packed (one of the greatest opening action scenes EVER) fun with a truly ROCKIN' soundtrack! I've shown it to lots of non-Sundance movie people and they were all blown away, even one guy who rates "Die Hard" as one of his all time favorites, LOL. When the guy lands on the windshield of a speeding car in the opening scene, you'll see just how good your SVS really is.

Hey, just go to your neighborhood Blockbuster and rent it first.

Ooh I hated "Trainspotting", I thought that it was one of the most pointless movies, just perfect for the Calvin Klein nouveau heroin addict generation. 2nd on my list of "bad movies" that received a critical nod would be "Clerks". Between those 2 movies I lost several hrs of my life that I can never get back.

Surprised to hear that, Art.

"Trainspotting" to me is actually a devastating critique of contemporary bouregoise life, as much an indictment of those who abuse heroin as those who DON'T abuse heroin but are stuck on other more subtle conventional drugs, namely consumerism and conformity. It's a very culturally subversisve movie, very ballsy, and the cynical tongue in cheek ending is also a brilliant satire of today's "just say no" simple-minded kitschy pop psychology.

Aside from that it's richly entertaining, very creative (that surreal toilet-diving scene is fantastic) with strikingly original characters none of whom are the least bit sympathetic in the usual sense of the word. Also lots of dark humor everywhere, which I loved---evil wit!

"Clerks" wasn't bad, but it was nowhere as good as this.

I understand the subtler points of the movie but felt that it was an ugly way of communicating it. In fact the horrible toilet diving scene was more than I could take. Creative yes, dark humor ofcourse, entertaining...not for me.

"Trainspotting" to me is actually a devastating critique of contemporary bouregoise life, as much an indictment of those who abuse heroin as those who DON'T abuse heroin but are stuck on other more subtle conventional drugs, namely consumerism and conformity."

Yes, but in the end it serves only to flush "them" down the crapper. Just my opinion, I like alot of questionable movies too. What's on the movie agenda for this weekend?

yep I knew that word would bring you out of the woodwork, Paul. LOL!

Actually it's still used all the time, but the rightwing-PC atmosphere in this country has forced most people to hide behind the more neutral term, "middle-class." In fact the rightwing-PC hegemony is so strong that nowadays very few pundits, columnnists or journalists even dare talk about economic and social class differences anymore because the rightwing media loves to label anything that threatens their corporate-fascist regime as "communist" or "socialist."

Art,

have you ever seen "Requiem for a Dream?" Also about a bunch of drug addicts but without any of the humor or creativity. I found it very hard to watch Jennifer Connelly playing a heroin-addict-turned-hooker. Ellen Burstyn puts in a brilliant performance as Connelly's boyfriend's mother who becomes addicted to diet pills though.

Up for this weekend:

Welcome to Sarajevo --- hope it's actually going to be about the Yugoslav conflict not about a bunch of Westerners who happen to go there, as often happpens when Hollywood tries to tackle "serious" subjects.

The Incredibles (my monthly quota of 1-2 junky but decent quality LFE flicks)

Scenes From A Marriage --- Ingmar Bergman classic I've always been curious about. His movies are challenging but usually rewarding in that they often reveal shadowy depths of the human psyche unlike any other films. A real Paul-movie, heh!

Yes Edster I have seen "Requiem", it is a difficult watch.

This weekend I will probably watch;

The Motorcycle Diaries
MicroCosmos
Being Julia or A Love Song for Bobby Long

I might be tempted to watch "City of God" instead of any of those we'll see.

For now as this is my Friday I will start the evening with a little Pendleton whiskey and Jimmy Smith from the "Retrospective" box set.

The Motorcycle Diaries = excellent! For a movie about Che it surprisingly has almost no political content at all.

"City of God" = absolutely phenomenal, extremely unique and very authentic. Between those 4 I'd pick it as well over the others.

City of God is a bit hard to watch as well. That storytelling in the background makes it look like a documentary which adds realism, a lot like Menace II Society.

More reasons NOT to rent movies. I wanted to rent disc2 of the new Sopranos and it was all rented out:-(

Ive only tried to rent 2 movies in the past 18months, and I'm batting 50%.

The good news is that I did buy Hitch today, and no doubt.........I'll find something within my own archives that will more than meet my SVS needs for this evening:-)

I'll save Hitch for later since it wont have any big LFE effects, and pick one or two 'warmups' that will more than shake things up.

Hmmm.......which action adventures will they be????

I'll soon decide.

I haven't rented in months. Most of the movies I talk either my wife or I own. At the price you can buy 'em for why rent. Occasionally I will rent but not often. If it's one that you will likely buy you've really upped the price by renting first.

I agree Art. Most of the time I just buy used movies from Blockbuster, but when a good one comes out I'll usually pick it up for no more than 15-16 bucks from Best buy or somewhere.
I started off this evening with a double shot of espresso from the new machine I got and threw in Floyd Dark side of the moon sacd, next onto Led zep 2 on vinyl and I will probably watch The Untouchables tonight. Like you guys care but I felt like telling anyway.

Hey that's pretty much what this thread is about. What's in or on one's player tonight. Sounds like you will have a well rounded evening. You will be doing an upper(espresso) while I do a downer(wine). I am currently listening to Arnold Bax Orchestral Works Volume 2 on the Chandos label, and just finsihed listening to Sir Edward Elgar's Piano Concerto on the Epoch label from Dutton Labs. Next will be Renee Fleming "The Beautiful Voice", that is if I get away with it. My wife is giving me the "when is it movie time" look. I really must get a bigger house.

I agree Art,

I've rented very few in years.

It just goes to figure that when I do on that "RARE" occasion.......I get screwed.

Oh well....I dont want to buy the Sopranos, so I'll get Disc2 some other time.

Anyway, for my first movie of the night.......I went with "Independence Day". I havnt seen the flick in over a year and it didnt let me down. Whoahh.....I had some of the loud sements going at -5db with the SVS cranking......WOW.....I could see my TV screen fluttering......LOL

YEA BABY!!!!

I havent picked my 2nd movie yet but will very soon.......
One more "THUNDER" movie, and then I'll settle down enough to watch Hitch to end my night:-)

Geez,

Another day and I'm beat. Glad to catch up with you all. I'll be going home now, haven't thought about dinner, entertainment for the evening or much of anything. But, my son just bought some U-2 so I'll probably see what he has to listen to and I'll exist with my current set-up until next Tuesday when the first set of Ascends arrive. However, I'm thinking that I may pull out one of the old Batman flicks or MIB and see what I can get out of the M-K sub for the night. I thought Paul would appreciate that. Later, Dave.

I watched "Independence Day" about a month ago. First time I'd seen it in years. Bought it cheap and had to see it. It was a blast! I immediately remembered why I liked it so much the first time. Well Paul I'm listening to Pucccini opera music and my wife is giving me the evil eye (just kidding, she has only asked about movies once tonight) so I guess it's time to consider the evenings first movie. She unwrapped a whole bunch of her new movies so I'm guessing it's going to be one of hers. She will lobby for "Shall We Dance" (Japanese version) and I will lobby for "Huckabees". Guess who will win?

Art,

Just saw "Shall We Dance", the American version and I enjoyed it immensely. First, I could really relate to this guy's life. It wasn't a bad life and, in fact, it was a pretty good life BUT he had really gotten into a rut. So, I almost started to tell the story BUT I'll end there and just say, I would recommend it in either version. Huckabees, hey, I'm thinkin' you're a loser on this one, big fella.

BUT, I'm home, food is on the way and my son opted for inviting a bunch of friends and watching "The Incredibles". So, I'll play along, at least until or unless, my wife suggests the new Batman flick or something else. One can only hope, right? Later, Dave

Second Movie "I Hate Huckabees" and god knows I do. Yikes, I felt like a freshman in college when everyone was idealistic and ignorant. This is the kind of movie that reminds of why I have such disdain for Hollywood. I'll have to do some reading or listening to music or both to wash the taste out of my mind. This is not the the unvarnished truth as you can see it in say "Baraka" it's hollywood's twisted version of the truth. So I guess I didn't like it much. Tommorrow I choose the movies.

My second movie was "Fifth Element" which has a great LFE, and then I followed up the evening with "Hitch".....great flick!!

Whoah...I think I can call it a night.

And yes Art....both Indep. Day and MIB are good flicks. During independence day when the troops are going up to save the world in that last scene.....how could you not turn it up to at least -5db??? Whoah...I had it blasting. In my HT, -5db is way louder that theaters. Definitely not a volume you'd keep it at for long,.....that's for sure.

Paul,

This is one you might actually enjoy. It's not a ballerina movie actually. It's more ballroom, I'd say and there's this one character that I'm thinkin' you're really going to relate to and appreciate. Although I'm not a big Susan Sarandon fan, except in Bull Durham, BUT she did well in this flick as well.

Paul, Art, & Joseph,

I have to agree with you guys on in-store renting, it sucks. I was thinking really of Netflix.com:

8-at-a-time for $47.99
Unlimited rentals - up to 8 movies out at a time for a flat monthly fee of $47.99.

7-at-a-time for $41.99

6-at-a-time for $35.99

5-at-a-time for $29.99

4-at-a-time for $23.99

3-at-a-time for $17.99

I have the $18 plan and it's plenty since I seldom watch more than one movie at a time.

Their selection is humongous (real important for someone like me who can't stand 90% of Hollywood blockbusters) and the best thing is, their website keeps track of which movies you rent and which movies you rate highly and uses that info to make recommendations of which similar movies you might like. Also you can click on the name of a director or actor and see a list of every movie that person's done that they have available. Want to look at every Spike Lee, Charlie Chaplin, or Marlon Brando flick? Just do a simple search like you would on Amazon and they should have it all, or nearly all.

Shipping's really quick if you live in or near a major city---I get new movies back in 2 working days usually. Heavier movie watchers like Paul might want to opt for maybe the plans with 4-8 movies out at the same time.

With prices and selection like that you can afford to be curious and explore all kinds of movies you normally would hesitate to fork out $4 apiece to rent from a shop---if it's a dud you always have more at home or more on the way.

I'm telling you, Netflix is the best thing since sliced bread!

Go check them out, I think they give you a free 2-3 week trial so you can cancel if you don't like it.

David,

I'm surprised you liked the Richard Gere version of "Shall We Dance"---the reviews I read confirmed my suspicion that it was the typical Hollywood cheesing-up and dumbing-down of the Japanese original, which I saw and loved.

No Paul it's not a ballerina movie but actually is a surprisingly accessible and simple but sweet little movie---not anywhere as artsy fartsy as the title might suggest. (The original Japanese version at least.)

Art,

I'm surprised you didn't like "Huckabees" but I've known a lot of people with otherwise similar tastes as mine who didn't like it either. I think that unless you like absurdist self-parodying theater and/or are familiar with Buddhist philosophy it can be a very disorienting film.

In fact the director, David Russel has said that his film was very much inspired by Buddhist teachings especially Buddhist psychology.

Ever seen "Vanilla Sky?" That was also a heavily Buddhist film.

Same with "Jacob's Ladder"---totally Buddhist.

Actually Im quite familiar with eastern religion. I've studied religion all of adult life. That's precisely what I don't like about the film. Hollywood loves to use something that I take very seriously and turn it into pop pseudo serious b.s. It's like an insult to Buddhism. But that's just my opinion. It did have it's entertaining moments. Just watched Vanilla Sky the other day. I can't believe you mentioned "White Palace", it's one of my wife's favorite movies. We just picked it up today on DVD for $6.

well not much LFE happening last night, LOL: saw "Bridges of Madison County"---surprisingly good, reminded me of what a true virtuoso Meryl Streep really is, she really takes over every scene! Clint Eastwood is a competent actor but he can't hold a candle to her, she really is just awe-inspiring.

The wife needed lots of Kleenex at the end, sigh. From what I've read the bestseller it's based on is awful though.

Other great Meryl Streep movies:

"Adaptation"---another Spike Jonze masterwork.

"The Hours"---brilliant! Funny because I'm not a big fan of Virginia Woolf but this movie made me want to go re-read some of her work. Probably Nicole Kidman's finest performance of her career, plus I really liked her as a brunette and even with that big prosthetic nose!

I actually own these two movies, and they are so good I watch them once every few months. Most of the other few movies I own tend to collect dust.

"Sophie's Choice"---not bad but the book is way better.

Art,

I didn't think "Huckabees" was making light of Buddhism at all, rather it was an almost flawless presentation of it in modern form...Zen Buddhism in particular.

The black bag that Jason Schwartzmann gets into is a perfect symbol of the sensory deprivation that occurs in deep meditation, and his subsequent obsessive and random thoughts/desires/emotions etc. he has while inside the bag is EXACTLY what happens to people at all but the most advanced levels of meditation.

Also that scene where Schwartmann and Wahlenburg whack each other with the rubber ball and have epiphanies is an allusion to the Rinzai Zen use of the kyosaku (otherwise known as "the encouragement stick") and bellowing in an effort to basically stop the discursive mind in its tracks.

Most importantly the irreverent, absurdist spirit of the film is very much in line with how Buddhists view much of human life, or what they call "the comedy of the ego" which is basically the great cosmic joke---a succession of comic hysterical states and illusions that we mistake for reality.

This is a perfect all in all, but no brainier action comic fun with some fantastic CGI effects, imagining is framed nicely the tones of dark shadow clearly visible throughout the films running time.

Halle Berry is wonderful and the stunt work as well making you total believe in it, put that's just fancy film editing.

I noted the film score with high dynamic levels, by Klaus Badelt and the use of a choir voices in parts of the score is fitting.

Sound mixing was top with huge dynamics that go down to 25Hz where she is trapped in the water way tunnels and flushed out with a almighty thud that knocks you back in the chair, while the atmospheric sounds on all six full spectrum channels giving directional cues to where the sounds are coming from, just like real life only it's still a movie of the night for the action film dvd crowed.

Disappointing though there is no audio commentary, and while the extras are on the thin side, the pickings are real slim to chose from, and there's no theatrical trailer.

Oh well better luck next time, at least we have it in six-track Dolby stereo digital.

Enjoy.

Edster you misunderstood my post. I didn't mean that I felt that "Huckabees" made light of Buddhism intentionally. More that we as Americans so fundamentally misunderstand Buddhism and other eastern philosophies that by using it's tenets inappropriately we unintentionally make light of it. Which ofcourse is ok, I just didn't care for that movie but again some of the movies I DO like are pretty bad. I just opened my new copies of "The Tuskeegee Airmen" and "Fallen". Listening to any music tonight. Right now I have on Henri Dutilleux "Orchestral Works III" on the Arte Nova Classics budget label. Very good indeed.

Later R2, tells 3PO the princess is on the death star, Luke and Han plan to break her out has she is has a lot of money that Han Solo would like to have for all the trouble he's gotten in.

But I can brag about the audio side in my home cinema that was the first goal, and when the time is right and the money has well, then I'll bite like there was no tomorrow, like the man says bring me solutions not problems and you clearly a major big head, so keep wearing it out, keep it up Paul...

At lest I can think, what components I need for my home cinema without asking the dumbest question in home cinema history, I always research the item I'm going to buy if it is something new if it where a Cinemeccanica vic V 35mm projector or Dolby CP-65 CP-200 CP-500 CP-650 or a THX 3417, or the THX D-20 digital X-over then I'll buy without hesitation.

And that's just a small list.

Arr, any more questions, not that I going to say any more to you, so shape up man!

I thought you would appreciate the Paradigm guy's "comment" in my Denon 3803 vs. 2805 string in "Receivers". He has not responded to my reply or voicemails. So, I'm thinking to Seattle I go for Paradigms.

However, to follow up on Edsters' comment, which Diana Krall CD, if I only buy one now?

Yes David I understand your frustration with that store. Unless you can afford the Reference series it may not be worth a trip to Seattle.

So, took the plunge and watched "The Incredibles" tonight...very pleasantly surprised! I expected lots of stellar visual and sound effects but this action-cartoon actually has a fairly creative storyline, decent dialogue, non-cardboard characters, and something of a subtext buried underneath everything!

At this rate I may get curious and check out the other Pixar films---I think "Toy Story" is supposed to be similarly good, is that right? What about those aquatic flicks, like "Finding Nemo?" Need to consult with my 8 year old niece, she has a whole bunch of these cartoons.

I have to say, tonight was the first night in a very LONG time when I actually got my money's worth from the surround sound, and had sharp pangs of longing for Paul's mammoth SVS sub!

Oh well, my next two Netflix DVDs waiting to be watched are definitely not LFE/DD films: "The Night Porter" and "Scenes from a Marriage." Back to the 'ole 3.1 sound, lol...

No, I have the 340s across the front. The 170s I have personally heard at a local Ascend owner's house though and would've bought them if I had a smaller listening room. Many people say they are even a tad more neutral than the 340s which have a different tweeter and an extra woofer.

Finding Nemo is spectacular if you have a TV that does vibrant colors especially well. A DLP or LCD really shines in this type of movie. Toy Story IMO has a better storyline but is more Walt Disney then The Incredibles was.

Shrek 1 & 2 are worth watching as well.

Toy story is good. You know I had similar reservtions as Edster about these animated flicks. But I have really enjoyed most of them that I have seen. Just bought "Finding Nemo" and "The Incredibles" which I have not seen. Bought "A Bug's Life" and "Chicken Run" which I have seen and enjoyed. And I will get "Shrek", "Shrek 2" and "Monsters Inc". They are all fun. But I'm a sucker I also liked "Babe". I do have an LCD RPTV and WOW! this stuff really looks good on it.

Born: Howard Robard Hughes, Jr., December 24, 1905, in Houston.

The life of living to the edge and wonting to go faster and higher, Howard Hughes was a man ahead of his time, with film direction and budget cost that soared high with "Hell's Angels" 1930 http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0020960/.

I would agree with Edster, Kano and Art on the Pixar films. All incredibly well done and with actual stories that adults can enjoy, with some humor that works for adults while going over the head of children - Eddie Murphy in Shrek and Shrek II on several occasions, for sure.

If you haven't seen it yet, definitely get out of the house and see Cinderella Man. I'd take it over Batman Begins BUT I'd rather watch Batman Begins on my HT - the sound will be fantastic and HUGE - that's for you, Paul.

Enjoyed the Aviator and will probably buy it for HT viewing BUT I wasn't as impressed as I'd hoped to be. Then, I'm picky on films - it's my So. Cal. upbringing and movie wasted childhood, I'm afraid.

Jason Borne a government CIA project gone wrong in the attempt to assassinate a target that Borne could not complete due to a flew and ends up begin shoot at while trying to escape from a yacht at sea.

When picked up and saved from a fatal death Jason try's to figure out why he was in the ocean left for dead.

This film as riddles and small clues to his identity, with a knack for fast reflexes and an instinct to kill, he's scared and wanting to know the truth about who he is.

Later the CIA get a lead to Bourne showing up at a U.S. embassy and escaping the from the clutches of around 40 armed marines, not soon later he finds a way of travelling out of the town with he's new friend Maria, where they are soon to be pursued by the CIA and some assassins that are on the trail, loaded with fast hand to hand combat and fast lines of cars about to pile up in the dozens.
Upload

And with a startling showdown not too over the top put the way this film works with fast editing music and sound effects BANG, as the bullet hits one of guys running up the stirs with an automatic machine gun wow that reverb and recoil of the pistol also hit me too, while the wholeness of the mix was not over bight with sounds like some Armageddon offending film soundtracks this was balanced nicely by Bob Beemer and Scott Millan.

Score was hard hitting with plenty of bass sub bass and LFE punch even as the end credits roll, dame good viewing and listening too.

The sequel was much of the same with extensions of action tied to it and the plot thickening with an attempt on his life only missing and killing the only thing he loved in life, now he's going to bring the fight to the CIA doorstop as he said he promised to do if they didn't leave him alone.
Upload

While this film runs shorter then the original by around 10mins at 1Hr: 44mins, and with a fast lane car chase to nearly top it off with, you can never tell if Borne is looking though the scope, I'm right behind you!
Upload

All films are farmed at 2.35:1 scope aspect ratio

Sound, The Borne Identity comes with a six-track Dolby stereo digital mix and DTS as well to chose from

While the sequel comes only in six-track Dolby stereo digital, and with both films engaged for centre back surround along with height surround too this will knock your socks off.

The Bourne Supremacy was far inferior to its predecessor...very predictable and in the scene where Matt Damon meets the daughter of a couple he killed while working as an assassin, shows just how mediocre of an actor he is.

But the fight scenes in the Bourne Identity were nice...based on the very practical and efficient Filipino martial art of Kali not the usual bogus Hollywood Tae-Kwon-Do garbage.

"Basquiat" = +10x
"The Usual Suspects" = +5x
"American Beauty" = +5x

"Adaptation" = +10x
"Eternal Sunshine..." = +5x
"I Heart Huckabees" = +5x
"High Plains Drifter" = +10x
"Being John Malkovich" = +10x

But I admit, roughly 60% of movies I've seen I have no interest in ever seeing again even if I enjoyed them the first time.

The imagining of the print transfer to tape to DVD, delivers the tones and textures of the colours nicely for a film that's 19 years old.

Visual effects by Richard Edlund's Boss visual effects company now no longer, which is a dame shame as, this company filmed most of its visual effects onto 65mm 5pef film or vistavision 8pef film stock that minimises the amount of grain in the image.

Sound mix is from the original 70mm elements of the road show Dolby stereo six-track presentation, presented hear in 4.1 left centre right mono surround and the "baby boom" sub bass channel, otherwise known as L.F.E, this goes down and when balanced correctly, it all sounds close to what those of you can remember about the 70mm exclusive realise.

Paul , why do you feel the need to prove to everyone that if their choices of movies, speakers or anything else does not agree with you then they are either idiots sicko's or something negative. I really am starting to believe that your own inadequacies make you feel like lashing out at what you either cannot understand or do understand but feel theatened by it. No one here is saying you are G^Y if you don't respond to a post that contains thoughts or feelings that don't coincide with that bravado red blooded attitude you hold on to so dearly in here. I think that some movies suck and some don't but I do not feel the need to piss all over someone who mentions one that I don't. Be nice in here Paul, this is a place for people who share the same interest, whether they share the same ideals or not, to talk about cool stuff like electronics.

I've been on a bit of a rampage as of late and my posts have been going downhill, and maybe I should take a break for awhile. Most of what I say is tongue-in-cheek, and isnt meant in a personal way.

For example, my jab at eddies movies listed above. I didnt mean to insult him personally, but rather take a jab at 'Sundance' and like movies in general.

I believe that "American Beauty" is a classic. I may just be sick but I'm in touch with my inner illness and have given myself permission to be a sick phuck, aight! Love "Adaptation" great movie. Excellent list Edster. As you know I don't like all of them (like that matters) but I do like like most of them. Especially:

The Hours
The Usual Suspects
Ameican Beauty
Memento
Adaptation
Eternal Sunshine
High Plains Drifter

Definately don't like:

Huckabees
Being John Malkovich (can't stand John Malkovich)

Pretty neutral on the rest.

I like lists Edster they are fun.

I agree with Joseph.

Not to mention taking a few jabs at me as well, I don't like losing my cool and it's not funny, further more the United Kingdom is not behind technology wise in the home cinema media.

Ever heard of importing, and seeing that we may not have HDTV, we sure had 625liine PAL "phase alternation line" over NTSC 525 national television standards committee, which have had for decades now.

Also I hate myself for then biting someone else head off, because they have been picking on someone else post like they don't know don't care any more or maybe they suffer sleeping disorder problems, I for have had some of these problems, and will not take anymore insults.

This isn't the New York bronks, all in all personal forum site, this goes out all over the world and to get insulted by another country, well I don't find it at all amusing.

So for the recoded could you please Paul, lighting up and show that the freedom and liberty, still mean something for the world over.

Guys, you have to understand what makes Paul tick: attention, attention, and more attention.

He loves to play the rebel-without-a-cause, contrarian and troll just to get a reaction, because he loves all the attention such behavior brings him.

You see, all of his habitual rants...anti-bookshelves, anti-smallTVs, anti-WAF, anti-Arcam/NAD, etc. are just veiled and plaintive requests for more attention, in whatever form it comes.

The more negative of a response he gets, the more it validates his deeply buried unconscious experience of always feeling alone, unloved, unwanted, and unnoticed. His indulgence in this type of attention-craving trollish behavior is simply his way of denying and repressing the fact of his own loneliness and unhappiness as a result of those unconscious feelings, and the fact that as much as it terrifies him, he really and deeply WANTS and NEEDS people to like him. So you see, underneath all that obnoxious bluster, Paul's antics are truly just one big inarticulate cry for help.

Most of us went through a phase like this in our teens, usually between the ages of 13 and 16.
Paul obviously suffers from an advanced case of arrested psycho-social development, and chooses to use this forum as a source of free therapy.

All we as innocent bystanders can really do during one of Paul's outbreaks is just take a deep breath and patiently, gently remind Paul of just how much we love him and what a wonderful exceptional human being he really is despite what he thinks of himself... It's painfully obvious that all he simply needs is to be acknowledged, accepted, and reassured of his own importance, value and dignity as a human being.

So, let us begin: PAUL, YOU EXIST! YES, YOU REALLY DO! YOU EXIST! YOU EXIST! YOU EXIST! WE LOVE YOU, WE REALLY DO...JUST THE WAY YOU ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRE!

This is a heart pounding Goosebumps trill ride, and they don't come any better than this based on the true story of the ill-fated 3 mission to land on the moon, yet only to horrible wrong with an explosion in one of the cryo-oxygen tank bottles, along with electrical power failing as well.

"Houston, We Have A Problem."

And with the ground control figuring out the funny, against tremendous odds this as to be one lucky 13, for the Apollo 13 crew to have made it back home across 250.000 miles over the gulf of space.

Sound wise only, this films blows the DVD out of the water for its DTS sound, of high bit rate, and incredible dynamic range with more than enough to launch it into orbit along with you and the entire room, KABOOM we have lift off, and we have cleared the tower....

The Yammi got a workout tonight. After blackhawk down, I watched FirstBloodII, and then the origional Robocop.

Ahhh...another successful movie friday night has come and gone.

Blackhawk Down made me sick.....A lot of what went wrong was because of idiots in the oval office playing politician generals, and then they cut and ran without completing the mission. Not only did the white house order them into battle without proper air support, but they sent them in during the day. In the end, it was a suicide mission destined to fail because they didnt let the generals plan and impliment the mission. I guess that's what the DUMBs(slick willy & company) are good at.......cutting and running. Apparently, that party still hasnt learned from lessons past.

OK, just finished "Last of the Mohicans." Last watched on my Laserdisc and it was considerably better on DVD with the new sound. Wife kept saying "I never heard that before" and had some new dialogue and scenes. VERY COOL!!!

Maybe Apollo 13 tomorrow Andy. Also, listened to Diana Krall, recommended by Art. So, I didn't get to hear the symphony tonight, Art, but Diana is excellent. Definitely enjoyed, "Peel the Grape" but the 9th cut, don't remember the title, was quite different, a little slower, more breathy on her part. Very well done.

More importantly, I was able to listen to just the Ascends and then fill in with the MK sub and then the Rock Solid rears and the sound was an incredible improvement over the prior setup. I'm almost convinced just to get the 170 rears and 340C and call it good. Then, I can move my old Denon downstairs with the Rock Solids for 2 channel - not great but a very passable system. Then, I'll sell the Polk center and BAs on eBay. The Ascends just keep impressing me, I guess. Even the wife came in and listened to Diana and jazz is definitely not her bag. Gotta get some sleep. Night all.

Six-track Dolby stereo SR, was the original release format of the film back in 1987, and winner for best sound effects editing.

Music is so nice turn it up a little bit more chapter 20 where all the drug dealers get shot to pieces, go for it Murphy.

Wow, what a film this is a sub bass kicker and the Ed-1209 is funny, when he malfunctions and shoots that poor dude over and over, with enough perforations in him to drain him out for a cup of tea.

David...that live performance last night was spectacular. The acoustics in the Silva Concert Hall are fantastic. Then I had a great seat. The composer (Osvaldo Golijov) walked through and greeted us. It was a feast for the ears and eyes. Live music reminds me of why this hobby means so much to me. What's wonderful is that I can go home after a performance and enjoy recorded music well reproduced. Oh joy joy!

Im not watching any movies tonight. The "Blackhawk Down" was a 3 disc special addition, and I'm going to watch the special features tonight. One of the discs is a documentary that should be very interesting.

Art,

which version of Lolita? I liked the original black and white Stanley Kubrick a lot better than the newer one, it was much more true to the book. However the last 1/2 of the movie can be a little slow going.

BTW Art, you might already know this but the author of "Lolita," Vladimir Nabokov, immigrated to the US in his early 20s I believe---yet his prose is light years better than that of most native-born American writers! Just amazing. If you haven't read the book it's a masterpiece, one of the few American novels of the 20th century that will probably endure.

Just saw "K-Pax" tonight...very good though the last 1/4 saw the plot kind of fall apart, wasn't too crazy about the ending, felt like the film was trying to have it both ways. But Kevin Spacey is really one hell of a great actor, if they'd cast somebody else in the film it wouldn't be anywhere as good.

Paul,

I actually agree with you on your comments about Clinton pulling out of Somalia so gutlessly but keep in mind two things: 1. It was George Bush Sr. (the far less retarded one) who got us into that mess in the first place, and 2. It was Congressional Republicans who were screaming for us to get out every bit as much as Dems, if not more so.

It turns my stomach that we cut and run so fast as soon as things turned ugly but no less so than Reagan pulling us out of Lebanon after that suicide bomber killed 241 Marines. One truck and a fruitcake driving it single-handedly drove out the world's greatest superpower?

What I never understood about that film is (assuming this part was true to the facts) it looks like that whole what, 20 hour ordeal would never have happened if our guys had not insisted on retrieving the body of the guy who fell out of the helicopter...I can't imagine how a soldier who's been shot and falls out of a helicopter at least 30 feet off the ground can possibly still be alive.

You might want to update your history knowledge. You're pretty much off base on all counts. The special feature Disc had two documentaries. A 90 minute piece done by the author of the book(very thorough), and there was a 60minute 'frontline' by PBS, and both were very good. I figured the PBS one would be 'liberally' tainted, but was suprised to find that it wasnt.

BTW, the soldier you're talking about didnt get shot. He missed the rope and fell 70ft and lived. He was part of the Ranger chalk and all of them were sliding down ropes to the ground, so what you said was completely inaccurate.

If you dont have the 3 disc special addition, I recommend you pick up a copy for the special features alone.

Bush SR had nothing to do with the blunders. That was all clinton. When bush was in office, everything was peaceful and the locals were greatful for the americans helping see that food was safely delivered to the starving. When Clinton took office, he pulled the marines, and only THEN things went to hell. Once the marines left, the warlords started attacking the UN people and the Clintons blunders began starting with the Albright sk@nk passing military resolutions at the UN without consulting the Pentagon.

From there......it was a continuous folly thanks to idiots in the white house.

> When Clinton took office, he pulled the marines, and only THEN things went to hell.

Clinton pulled the Marines mainly because he was caving in to political pressure to pull out, most of it coming from Congression REPUBLICANS.

I won't argue with you that Clinton was politically spineless most of the time he was in office, even though I did agree with the majority of his policies.

"Alien" "In space no one can hear you scream"

This chillier thriller horror science fiction, blockbuster from "Dan O'Bannon" is a total rush, directed by "Ridley Scott" which was to turn into a franchise with three more in the chest busting films to follow.

And not to mention "Predator" and "Alien vs. Predator" all of which have made "Fox" rich for the day.

The sound mix on the 2000 edition is the one to play as this comes close to the 1979 theatrical 70mm six-track Dolby stereo presentation, as with the 2003 edition which does not as some of those wider sound effects, which are placed on the left and right have been mixed into the centre channel, all though there has not been any improvements over the use of the L.F.E, that's good it should be kept the way it looked and sounded as seen in 70mm, this version used mono surrounds to artistic usage in those dark scenes in those air-ducts, man that's creepy stuff.

Hay this one cool film, for the summer nights in with the THX home theatre, hear your favourite films just as the director intended you to hear, with crisp clear dialogue, wider dynamic range and audio that surrounds you.
Upload

The film was photographed in 16mm Techniscope, 2.35:1 scope aspect ratio and 35mm film prints struck up, the 16mm gives the film a grainy look and a documentary style, that reflects era long past now now into the history books.
Upload

The characters are likeable Richard Dyefuss, Ronny Howard, Paul Le Matt, Charlie Martian Smith, Candy Clark, Mackenzie Phillips, Harrison Ford, Cindy Williams and Wolfman Jack are all memorable, in this comic fun last night out with the gang and cursing hot-Roding...

Art,

Glad you enjoyed the concert. Well, I'm here to tell you that there are speakers in Spokane that are close to the Ascends, some costing 2-3 times as much, BUT I didn't find anything that was definitively better that would get me to pay 2-3 times more because I just "had to have them." So, I think the Ascends are staying. More on my original string.

The Indiana Jones trilogy is a whipping lashing adventure of great stunts visual effects music and sound effects, taking you on the journey and escaping near death jaw dropping scenes, just like the Saturday adventure serials.

And these films will knock your socks with a fully three screen matching front loudspeakers, matching array of surround loudspeakers, and a huge 18in sub bass.

And the glue incense the medium, is the message if you don't have the equipment, you don't have the medium in which to play this back in full six-track Dolby stereo THX sound, then you're not going to get the message across.

"American Graffiti"---now that was a good one!

Indy Jones is also one of the best action series around---decent acting & script, lots of humor. Anybody know if they're ever gonna make any more of them?

Andy how about some pics of Jackie Chan flicks? Now THAT's my man---lots of chop-socky but also never takes himself seriously, lots of great goofy humor.

I have seen Rush Hour around at my best friend's house, sadly the film was presented in Dolby stereo only and none THX at the time, Jackie Chan's choreographing the stunt works out carefully, always results in some type of injury, man that guy is nuts.

This is also like the buddy, buddy types like "Lethal Weapon" series with laughs and gags all throw-in only Jackie goes a bit too far, the guy has nine lives, if you ask me.
Upload

And not to mention "Rush Hour 2" I'll have to hunt down some Jackie Chan, for a chopping cutback price.

Go for it Jackie...
