Hey everyone, my name is Erich. I'm brand new to this whole car audio thing, since I'm only 15. Haha. Anyway, my birthday is this saturday and since I'll be getting my license I really wanted to upgrade my car's audio. I'll be driving a 1999 Isuzu Trooper and I have about $700-$900 to put into a system upgrade. Currently, I have an Alpine CDE-7872 50w x 4 pre-amp/radio, a pair of 6-inch and a pair of 4-inch infinity speakers, and a Pioneer 300w RMS amp. All of that is from around 2001-2002.
Like I said earlier, I'm looking to upgrade my system. I went to Audio One in Va. Beach this afternoon and a guy there recommended I start off with upgrading my pre-amp and getting a Kenwood excelon (don't remember the model, sorry) for ~$200. Then he suggestd that I get a pair of Memphis Car Audio 12" subs for ~$260 with a box. I know I'll need to upgrade my amp but I forgot to ask him about it so I figured I could ask you all.
Like I said, I have about $700-$900 to spend and I'm looking for the most bang for my buck. Any input that you have would be helpful/
(Honestly, my main concern is the Memphis subs, since I've read mixed reviews about them)
Thanks in advance!

my neighbor had one and it was horrible. ended up using it as home theater sub and still sounded bad. dont waste your $ on them. and with that much $ shop online not in a car audio store u'll have way more options.

Memphis subs are ok,really depends on the model. Their lower line subs arnt that great but I would pick the Memphis subs over anything from Boss anyday lol. You dont really have to get a new head unit but I would reccomend it. $700-$900 isnt really that much for a complete system. You will need wiring, subs, speakers,HU,a sub enclosure, etc. You can find great deals on used equipment online either on ebay or on the forums. Just make sure and buy from a reputable person. I can try to put together a decent list of equipment for you and try to stick to your budget, give me a min.

D,Boss? Really? Is that a joke?

Here is a list of a very respectable system, well IMO. You should be very happy with it and its a nice starter system.

HU

Sub
http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_4243_Alpine-SWR-1222D-TYPE-R.html

Speakers

Amp
http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_8553_Alpine-SPR-17S.html

Wiring
http://www.knukonceptz.com/productDetail.cfm?prodID=KLM-K4

And you will need another set of RCAs
http://www.knukonceptz.com/productDetail.cfm?prodID=eKo-RCA5

Speaker Wiring
http://www.audiosavings.com/products/Car-Speaker-Wire/CADENCE-14-GAUGE-100-FEET- BLUE-SPEAKER-WIRE-SPOOL/100+FEET+14G152M-BLUE.aspx

Box for sub

Ok so all that comes to a total of $837. And thats a complete stereo, from you HU to your wiring. You should be happy with that. You can always buy the stuff from ebay and probably save some money. Or you can save money by building your own box. If you really want 2 subs then you will need a seperate amp for them and another amp for your components. The amp I selected for you is a 4ch so you can run your component speakers off the front 2 and bridge the 3/4 ch. to run your sub.

man i messed with my buddy bad when he was purchasing those subs not as much about the amp cuz i had never heard of planet audio. but he got it all hooked up and it amazed me. but in all consideration it is beating off a back window in a small hatch which has a tendency to make a lot of subs sound real good and loud. but when he rolls up the windows u can feel a lot of air pressure from the subs blow across ur face

I'd sway away from that Boss subwoofer, it just gives me creeps thinking about that ugly thing being in my vehicle.

On the other hand, some boss stuff may not be complete junk, at one time some of their amplifiers were built by Zed audio. I know that doesn't necessarily mean that they were great amplifiers but it gives me a litle faith that maybe boss might have had a descent product at one time lol.

Thanks everyone for all of your replies. I've been really busy with school stuff for the past couple days, but I always check back on threads I've started.

TWiZTiD & D Loco, thanks a ton for all of the links. I've done a bit more looking around and I've decided on a Kenwood Excelon X-695 HU, but I'm still on the fence about subs. TWiZTiD, you seem to be a fan of Alpine, so do happen to know about the quality of Alpine's Type E 10" subs?

I haven't heard a type-e but the type-s isnt that great of a subwoofer and it's the step above. I'd sway away.

Looks like im coming into this thread a little late, but allow me to post my own opinion on a setup:

Alpine CDE-123 ($189.99):
http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_34353_Alpine-CDE-123.html

Kicker ZX400.1 + Wiring Kit ($174.99):
http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_29721_Kicker-ZX400.1-10ZX400.1-Amplifier-Kit .html

Kicker VCVR122 + Enclosure ($249.95):
http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_21901_Kicker-VCVR122-10VCVR122.html

Pioneer TS-D1002R ($57.99):
http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_22428_Pioneer-TS-D1002R.html

Pioneer TS-D1602R ($79.99)
http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_11269_Pioneer-TS-D1602R.html

This here is just a basic entry level system. Overall the price is $752.91 before shipping costs. It's got everything you need, and you can simply run the Pioneer Speakers off the Decks power.
