Strange iPhone issues

Hello,
I have a very odd problem. About two months ago I purchased a tom tom ipod car kit. In case you do not know the Tom Tom kit is a car adaptor for one's ipod-touch or iphone. It not only mounts the device on the dash but it also connects it to a power source (via the cigarette lighter) and to the stereo via a standard AV cord going to the stereo's auxiliary port. Here is my problem, when I plug everything in and play music I get a strange humming overtop the music. This only happens when I run the AV cable through the TomTom device; if I plug the cable directly into the iPhone's headphone jack everything is fine. Furthermore, the humming increases and decreases depending on how much I am revving the engine. This last fact makes me believe that this is a voltage issue. I drive a 97 honda civic, their seems to be no problem with my iPhone or the TomTom kit because I have tried them in other cars. Is their anything I can do to fix this problem? Thank you very much for any help, -Justin
