Quick amp/power question

I was wondering if it would be bad or if it was possible to hook up a 2000w amp but use a DMM to set it down to around 1000-1200w..... anyone? I eventually plan on getting a HO alt and 0ga ran.

One being its too good of a deal to pass up and I need an amp in my car. And another because not everybody has the time and money to get a HO alt and 0ga ran anda couple more woofers... I plan on doing it when I get the funds. Basically I was just wondering if I could tune the amp down and direct replace it for now.
