Explanation please.....subwoofer specs

i hear many saying you should tune your box to around the fs on your sub.

explain this to me.

my sound splinter rl-s has a fs of 30.9.

the recomended tuning freq for a ported box is 24hz. that is way off.

lets hear some explanations or theories to why this is.

thats the ported freq where the sub will have the best flat response through out the freq range i think thats what the website says or did say

because if you tune something at say 24hz, it isn't going to reach it's best response at 24hz. It's going to be "louder" at 3-6hz over it's tuning frequency.

I have found that what the manufacturer recommends is usually what works best, or close to it.


Having no manufacturer spec, I tune a few hz higher than the Fs of the sub, at the lowest. Have found that to be a safe guess when given no specs.

I understand the flat response idea but I also raise the question how will it SOUND below its fs like the hdc12 will play below its fs but tuned at 35 hz its not as tight as it should be

it super punchy up on the higher notes though tuned at 35 hz
