Boss R850 Amplifier.....what makes it bad?

Especially since it was purchased new for $62.90.

I guess if he (my son) gets a year out of it (the warranty period), then perhaps his funds will allow an upgrade. He is just trying to do to much to quick... What could he expect to spend to achieve those specs plus reliability?
