Speakers won't work after burning smell

Unregistered guest
Hi All, I am hoping somone has a clue as to what I need to do after my car speakers stopped working today. The stereo still looks like it is working but no sound is coming out. This occured after I started smelling a pretty harsh burning smell. I couldn't pin point the exact spot of the smell. Would the problem be the speaker it's self or just a wire or something? Ay help would be greatly appreciated.

if you're smelling a burnt smell if its coming from the speaker you probably burnt the voice coli which means the speaker won't move. Can you see if it moves or not.

You clipped your speakers to death probably.

OK- i'll check to see if the speakers will move but if the coli is burned does that mean I have to get new speakers or just a new Coli?
What does "clipped my speakers to death mean?"
Clearly I don't really know ,much about this stuff!
Thanks for the info guys!

does the smell come from the region of the speakers, or the radio itself?
that should be easy to tell.

The smell came from the rear speakers.

Actually, he spelled it wrong, beings it seems you don't actually know what he is talking about, it is a voice "coil" , not coli.

don't want any e-coli in your voice coils.. that's for sure.

There is no way to replace a VC without admitting to the manufacturer you messed something up and then they basically charge you for a new set of speakers. Its better just to look into getting new speakers.

in many cases, true.
some speakers have replaceable coils (peerless tweeters, solo X sub, etc) and some companies under warranty will replace the driver. The cost to rebuild a driver most times though, is prohibitive unless you spent $500+ on each speaker.
