with a 2 channel 40wrms/ch amp on a 400wrms dvc sub...40wrms/coil

if clipping occurs could it heat up the coil enough to cause thermal failure......
or destroy the coil by bottoming out....

i hear that if the amps rms is 1/4 or less the subs rms its wirtually impossible to cause damage....but then again...the sub looks like it wants to pop out

if you are causeing an amp to clip you will fry any sub that is attached to that amp. When an amp clips it sends DC through your vc's not ac. its like trying to put square signals through small circle's the vc heats up fast and will cook if not taken care of early!

yea i know that,heard it 1000 times.....but

even though the amp is clipping is the dc enough to cause the coil to heat up...with such a small amp and such a big sub

Eg a 10wrms amp to a 400 rms sub....i dont think that amp will produce enough dc to cause thermal failure

I would assume over time it would cause enough damage to fail.

dc is dc Nester. any dc voltage accross a subs voice coil will fry it! if you provide that same sub with double the pwr and clean AC signal. It will prob take it perfect!!
But to answer the question, yes that dirty DC signal will kill a sub after extensive use!

clipping causes the average power to increase/double. the additional heat to the vc could potentially damage it. it just depend on the actual power handling capability of the sub and the true power rating of the amp. if the amp is truly 40 watts and the sub can likewise handle 400 watts in reality, the clipping will have a hard day in west hell adversly affecting the coil. because 40 watts doubled is 80. where tweeters are concerned, the increase in avg power is in the high hz range. this is much more harmful because of a lack of filtering. the subs have that part covered.
