All modern amps now come with built in xover so imo u really don't have 2 buy a separate 1 . They don't pull heavy current like amps do .

mono amps have low freq settings so u r cool there

multi chan amps have full/mid/low freq settings too

U can also u a pre-amp if u like 2 change your setting very often from your dash .

Also certain higher models of HU come with subwoofer preout rca which makes things so much better cause its already separating the bass freq 4 u .......

Everything electronic draws current.
A crossover and an amplifier are two totally different entities, you need each for different purposes. Generally, a crossover will complement the amplifier.

An amplifier amplifies a signal, makes your speakers run.
A crossover takes an input signal and generally break the frequencies up. Like on my amp for my sub. I have a LPF and HPF, so that I only run frequencies between about 20hz to 90hz to it.
As Rovin said, most amps come with built in crossovers.
