If laser detection so bad...

Everyone states the laser detection is nearly impossible and "bad" at best. so what's up with paying 400 for a laser detector? If a cop is pointing at a car infront of you with instant on laser wouldn't your detector see the signal? if not what's the point. Why don't all cops just use laser and not radar? I my area the traffic cops all use laser of some kind, instant on i think its called. So does that mean it would be worthless to buy one of these 300-400 detectors?

Also if you use a laser jammer and pass a cop at some speed abviously much over the speed limit (a traffic cop doesn't need a laser/radar gun to know someone's going 30+ over 65mph) isn't he still going to come out and ticket you for something?

laser detection doesn't work due to the narrow beam used to detect your speed.
when you're shooting a beam less than a foot wide and reflecting off a license plate or radiator, it's not going to be picked up by a detector on your windshield.
this "laser scatter" idea is marketing hype.

if your cops use laser, I suggest you just not speed to be honest.
a CB is about your best defense. Truckers always call out speed traps on channel 19.

I've had experiences with lasers. It's all marketing scam to me. Glasswolf is right, all hype. My radar detector didn't see anything till it was too late. Your best bet is to slow down or watch the car in front of you.
There's a myth that if you have mirrors all over your car it might save you from the laser...but I wouldn't put my money on it.

If its all hype, then why spend 400$ on a v-1 "laser" detector when a 100$ model can detect 5 year old radar guns from a mile away...?....do you really need to pick up the signal 2.5 miles away or whatever the x50 can do?

anyway, thanks for the replys, good information! so why not make detectors what can pick up smaller radius' of beams from laser? hum. What about detectors which mount near like where your fog lights are positioned, so about the same level as where they are pointing it at, would that help?

Confusing, if the beam is in front being pointed at a car in front of you, how come they can't make a detector that "sees" it?...or maybe they can....lol, who's side are they on anyway :-)

you're talking about bouncing a laser beam off of any flat reflective surface of the vehicle.
unless you covered the entire car in sensors, it's not going to work, and even then, you'll only know you just got busted for speeding by LIDAR.

the reason you get a detector like a V1 or X50 is to detect POP radar, instant on at greater distance, and if needed, to avoid VG2, and Spectre1-3 detection
*shrug* its up to you in the end.

LIDAR speed calculation time is EXREMELY fast; coupled with the VERY narrow beam that hits your car if you do detect it you're already busted... Honestly I own the X50 and have used the V1 and they are pretty equal, the V1 arrows just annoy the cr@p out of me and are not to accurate around here (store security systems trigger Laser, KA, K, and X). As far as detection distance I will take every foot I can get :-)!

Laser detectors are somewhat useful... they can tell you that you are about to be pulled over and given a speeding ticket.

Better yet are laser jammers like the Passport or Blinder. I just installed the full "passport srx" concealed radar laser jammer system and I love it.

The sensors and jammers are completely concealed and I no longer need a big black box hanging off my windshield. Don't get me wrong, I love my V1 but it just doesn't compare.

If in the event they do even detect any scatter at all from the narrow beam that is hitting the front of your car...

This is the new Passport SR7+ which is the new version of the old SR7 detector and two front and one rear ZR3 laser jammers combined in one package. It is more sensitive than the Valentine1 but it costs a lot more... $700 plus installation.

I think you are confusing a radar detector's main purpose, to detect radar, not laser! Whether it be the valentine 1 or escort x50 or cobra whatever model...they are designed to give advance warning with radar only. These radar detectors do have laser sensors, but they do not usually go off before your car is hit because laser at 1000 feet is only about 18 inches wide, radar is over 80 feet wide at this distance. If you want to protect yourself from laser, get the Blinder m20 or m40, or escort's laser shifter, or beltronics laser diffuser. The Blinder actually has sensors that mount to your bumper and send back the same laser signals to confuse the laser gun and cause it to stay blank, allowing you to slow down.

Having said that, a cheap radar detector will be able to pick up an old radar gun, say an X band gun used in NJ. However, what seperates the 100 dollar detector (cobra) from the 300-400 detectors (v1 and x50) are the ka and k bands. These are much more difficult to detect. filtering also makes a big difference in performance. The cobra may pick up K band great, but who wants to hear 93 false alarms all day? these are just a few features which seperate all kinds of radar detectors.

What would be the correct way to use a laser jammer like the Blinder? Do you slow down and than turn it off to let the cop read your legal speed or do you just leave it on. Can you be penalized for interfering with the law officers duty?

there is one flaw in your logic a laser is a beam of light it cant be scattered by an em feild because of the nature of the beam itself, the light is bounced off of an object and relfected back twards the cops sensors on his vehicle, the speed of the beam would tell the cop how fast you are going, it determines your speed by detecting the delay in the amount of time it takes the light to return. if the light is absorbed or reflected in a direction other than twards his vehicle then the cop wouldnt know your speed, radar however can be scattered because its sound waves, sound can be counteracted by a negative frequency cancelling the wave out.
