"records" change every year. when the rules for different organizations change, so do the records.

i know that in USACi a guy down here is louisiana did 181.5dB in super port-wars. that 181.5 is the highest # EVER recorded on a termlab mic.

it was in super port-wars...you stick the mic into the port of your box. 160dB+ scores are common in super port.

But was still an insane #. he did it w/ 1 10" selenium sub but i'm not sure which amp he was using.

Yeah, 181 is pretty damn loud, but it's not that big of a deal in super port wars. I'm pretty sure Jeff is right. Pioneer hit like 176 something with their top subs.

What sucks, is many companies hold the world record for SPL, just depending on what format is used. Some allow doors open, some doors closed, some mic on the windshield, others mic placed wherever. Would be cool if they would make one offical format pertaining to mic placement, and those sort of things for the true "SPL World Record". Has anyone heard what Alma Gates and the new Bronco has done yet?

i do believe CUSPID holds the current SPL records at 179 DBS, some guy had about 50 "max power" subs (made by Cuspid) in van they were being powered by (of course) 25 cuspid amps that are rated at 1600 Watts Max!!!! ALTHOUGH, they are only 80 RMS for ONLY 2 channels

I have been building speaker boxes, systems, and studied alot of audio science reviews and junk like that since 1987.

I have never been to a SPL war or competition, and because I am about quality, not quantity.

Nevertheless;

It has been said that a large orchestra measures about 100 dB.

110 dB average concert

120 dB loud thunder

130 dB threshhold of pain

140 dB military jet take-off

160 dB instant perforation of eardrum

Now; I am not doubting the scientific physical possibilities, but are any of these claims provable by a set standard of measuring device and/or parameters?

Why would anyone build something that obnoctious anyways?

Just curious...

Speaker measurements have a standard of measuring at 1 meter away using 1 watt of power. Thats how we get the dB rating for our stuff.

If you have ever looked at a frequency response curve on a graph; you may have noted that bass frequencies are usually well below the dB rating that the speaker is labeled at.

Most manufacturers use the dB level that the speaker produces at 1kHz.

My point is; the frequency, wattage input, and distance from the mic to the speaker should be standardized.

I wonder what kinda numbers you could hit in an M1A Abrams with the top turret hatch open. I'd think its armor would make a fairly rigid, low loss enclosure. Probably has one bad@$$ alternator too.

Donny Keen,

Wiring multiple speakers is called SERIES/PARALELL

Say for instance you have 16 woofers;

Divide them in sets of four each.

Wire each set as follows;

1 speaker + 2 speaker = series
3 speaker + 4 speaker = series
------------------------------
Paralell the sum of 1&2 plus 3&4 together now.

Repeat the process again with the remaining 3 sets.

See at first you wire in series, doubling the resistance. Then you wire the next step in paralell which halves the resistance, thus bringing it back down to even resistance.

When all four sets are wired, take set 1 & set 2 and repeat the process again. Now do the same for set 3 & set 4.

Note:
You may only do this in even sets of four (4,8,16,32,64,128,256, etc...). If you do it in any other grouping, you will end up with chaos, if you dont understand audio science.

In other words take this as useless information.

Hi. i recently sold my Kicker Comp 15" and kenwood 1000w amp, it was way too loud and not very clean. I want a good sounding system that is deep and loud but not pounding. I was thinking 2 10" rounds or maybe just 1 10" Kicker L7. what do you think would be better? if anything else would sound better what brands do you recommend? also please recommend a some-what cheap amp that will run the system. thanks
