Not sure if this is the right forum

Do you need a new head unit to power subs so they hit hard or can you use a stock one. I have a 02 Ford SUV. I was wondering if I could use my stock head unit so I could keep my 6 CD changer. I always thought you needed a new head unit, but my friend runs his sub off a stock head unit and it sounds loud.

Does anyone know?

You can use the one you have now, but an after market will let you play with just sub settings and other cool stuff you can't do with the stock one.

I hope you're not talking about actually powering a sub with a head unit, that's a no-no. A stock head unit can power a sub amplifier via an LOC, but typically an aftermarket unit will work better due to less noise and cleaner sound from the preouts, and added control of the sub via crossovers and level control.
